Noticed today that my 1 yr old Hen “Cocoa” seems to have a prolapsed oviduct. I gave her a warm bath, applied olive oil and preparation H. She has been put in the broody pen in a crate with blanket draped for total darkness. Is this okay? Should I keep her inside? Currently 3 broody hens are in the pen, but she is alone in crate. Any other advice/recommendations welcome!! Judging by the pic, is this a serious case? She is my fav girl with the best personality!!. Im so worried. How can you tell if she is egg bound? I Should mention as well that she has been acting broody (but not sitting at all) for a few days now, but is sharing a nest with her bestie that has been broody for almost a week so it wasn’t making sense to me? By acting I mean, chirping at everyone, walking full time with head down, tail feathers spread etc.. I’m wondering if maybe she isn’t broody? Maybe she is in pain or egg bound? I’m lost

You are off to a good start with the prolapse. Treating a prolapse is a long treatment. You are looking at a month long treatment.

Hydrocortisone, which is the active ingredient in preparation H, it is best to use ointment over cream. It allows the medicine to absorb better into the tissue and will help maintain moisture. Not sure which you are using, but I would switch to ointment if you can. You will want to treat her with this 4 times a day. I coat the prolapse tissue with it.

You will want to gently push the prolapse tissue back in. It may take a while before the tissue stays in. For my duck, it took over 3 weeks before her vent stayed in.

You are going to want to give her extra calcium during this time to promote proper contractions of the muscles. 1ml of Calcium gluconate or a 500mg tablet of calcium citrate can be given to her once a day.

You will want to keep her indoors to keep her vent clean and prevent injury and necrotic tissue. You also want to get her to stop laying eggs to reduce the strain on her vent. Putting her in dark is what most people suggest. I never have much luck with that, but I have managed it with letting them go broody so she stops laying eggs.

Also, you will want to give her a like warm baths couple times a day. Eventually with my duck, her vent would go in on its own when I put her in the bath. The baths will help keep the vent clean and moist.

I also give anti-inflammatory to help reduce inflammation. This helps the hydrocortisone reduce the inflammation. Reducing the inflammation is key to getting the prolapse to stay in.

Lastly, If you think there is a possibility of infection, you can also treat her with an antibiotic.

As long as she is eating and drinking fine, she should be able to recover from it. And you can also give her ground up chow to reduce the irritation on her vent.

Wow, thank you so very much for all the info!! I’m doing epsom salt baths a cpl times a day. Massaging area with coconut oil for 10 minutes or so and then applying preparation h before putting her back in her covered crate indoors. I gave her fermented layers feed today (1/4 cup), oyster shells, and lettuce. Should I still get more calcium? Her stool is very thick and she is not pooping nearly as much as she normally does. Is there something I can do for that? It actually looks slightly worse today 😢
She did lay an egg this morning although she spent much of the day yesterday in the dark.

So a vet is always the best option of you can. I am guessing that may not be an option for you.

I would use calcium citrate or calcium gluconate over the oyster shells because you assure she is getting enough. Unless you are hand feeding her oyster shells, I would go the other route. Both you can give those to her twice a day. Here is how to give the drugs

In the picture it looks like there might be necrotic tissue, but it is hard to see. What are the darker spots? If it is dead tissue, you may need to remove it.

Also are pushing the tissue back? I would clean the tissue off and coat with the hydrocortisone ointment (again cream tends to come off easier) and push it back in. You can even put some bacatracin on it if you see any cuts to the tissue. If you only have hydrocortisone cream, put the bacatracin on second to help seal on the hydrocortisone. If you think the tissue is getting worse, then an antibiotic may be a good idea. You can order them online or you may be able to get fish antibiotics at a pet store. Depends on where you live. Here is an online link.

The Epsom salt baths can potentially dehydrated her. If you are going to do Epsom salt baths, I would do it pretty dilute in case she drinks any of the water. I would put my girl in the bath for an hour or so.

How well is she eating and drinking? If she is not eating and drinking well, you can tube feed her to help get her through this. I would just start with fluids in her case. Here is about tube feeding. If you don't have the supplies, they are good to have on hand even if you don't use them.
