Was out with my girls this morning and noticed my BR opening and closing one eye, then keeping it closed for a minute or two. She's eating and drinking fine, no discharge, no swelling. I brought her in, put a warm tea bag to her eye. I'm wondering if maybe she got something in it or was pecked in it. Has anyone experienced this? Hoping it is something small and not the start of something big.

I keep a bottle of lubricating eye drops in the run. If I see a chicken scratching at an eye or a bubbling eye, it immediately gets flushed with the saline drops. The stuff is very inexpensive, and it's so handy to squirt into an eye that may have dirt or some kind of foreign body irritating it.

An eye that is obviously irritated and also swollen, gets a dab of Neosporin in it, as well.

The weird thing is, I was out with them this morning and everything was fine. Suddenly her eye is closed, but she's opening it in intervals. I brought her in and checked it out, not swollen, eye ball is clear, no gunk. I rinsed it with saline, put a warm tea bag to it. As far as I can tell she isn't having raspy breathing or anything.

Now she's acting somewhat lethargic. Still no other symptoms besides one shut eye.

The eye probably hurts. I suggest flushing it again, and maybe again later if she's still shutting the eye.

When I've had a small speck of foreign matter in my eye, it can sometimes require repeated flushing to finally get the bit of irritating matter washed out.

Also, the cornea can become scratched by the foreign body floating hither and yon over it. Putting a dab of antibiotic ointment in that eye can be immensely soothing.

Thank you so much! I flushed her eye out and put in some antibiotic drops just in case. Today, it's open and she's feeling great.
