I purchased a silky chick as a pet, it is 7 weeks old, I know nothing about chickens. I have a feeling I have a Roo, but I see you can't really tell until they are much older, does this red around the mouth indicate a rooster, do I still have any chance of this being a hen?

Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow

At 7 weeks old, definitely cockerel. :(

You don't state what else you have, so just in case.. I will mention that a single chicken will never be a happy chicken. They need friends. :)

Any time you get silkie chicks, they will be straight run and that means 50% boys. I have been lucky and got all 3 girls on my first round. But paid for it by getting all 4 boys on my 2nd round. 3rd round yielded 3 girls and 7 boys. So if you're counting that's 6 girls and 11 boys.

Whoever sold you that silkie "just now" PROBABLY new it was a boy especially if they actually breed them. :( Looks like he might be splash, some call it silver. Cute boy. :love

Yes, chickens are VERY social creatures and do best when you have not less than 3.

NO, I would NOT just get more roosters as suggested by another poster. :old But you might consider buying a couple of girls to go with him. Even if they are older and already laying that is OK I would not get younger chicks because he will mature sooner and try to mate before they are ready. Please note that my silkie hens and cockerels are just as loud as my full sized hens and rooster. So if your in the city or not allowed to have roosters, you might consider what you need to do with him before it's too late. Also note, that while they aren't much threat, my silkies are just as prone to being jerks as any other rooster I've met.

Best wishes no matter what you decide. :fl
