Please help

He's so cute!!!

Gosh he is very cute! :love

NONE of my full grown hens have combs like that even at over a year old. In this pick he appears to be either splash or paint, still familiarizing myself with the differences.

Did they have any more available where you got him?
Splash- looks like it got 'splashed' by paint, so only the tips of the feathers
Whereas Paint- it is 'painted' on and goes all the way down the feather

or at least this is how it was explained to me

Thank you. That is the way I understand it as well, but still training my eye to tell the difference. :highfive:

I actually worked very hard to get paints and have been considering breeding. I also happen to have B/B/S...

Are you agreeing that this one appears to be splash? The one splash Silkie I have definitely wouldn't be confused with the paints in person. The splash looks almost more grey or silver (as I think some actually call it in Silkies), where as the paint looks like a Dalmatian. But the splash Silkies also don't really look the same as my splash in other breeds either. They must be special! :D

if it isnt black it could be a blue splash, but yes i am thinking it is a splash, but @Ravynscroft would be better at answering that, she knows way more about them than i do

I am off to pick up a chick friend, well my seven week old rooster get along with a one week old silky?
they could squabble for awhile, and depending on the breed it may be a lot bigger than your silky

A one week old Silkie will still need heat. It usually is a BAD idea to put together chicks with that kind of age separation because your COCKEREL (not rooster until 1 year old) is going to be far along in his pecking order where as the young chick won't be thinking that way until about week 3... but will have NO chance of competing with that much older, in my experience. Only way to even the playing field a little is maybe get a FEW of the younger silkies for your older one to spread the pecking around to.

With your older silkie being 7 ish weeks.. might still have to use a look but don't touch set up for integration.

Hope it works out, and looking forward to pics of your new addition! ;)

Exactly so... to explain it out clearer, in splash a single feather can be colored in patches and parts while other parts of the feather are white/light...

In Paints, the black patches every single feather with black on it will be completely and totally black from tip to shaft... no white spots on an individual feather... Paint is a result of 'pigment holes' while splash is 2 dilutes of black...

That help?

And yes, the chick posted here is a splash... :)

I suggest buying from the hen column and not straight run. It might be a bit more expensive, but a female or two would be very helpful. Roosters are social creatures and kind-of need a female to be content.
