Please Hold My Hand

Thanks Cyn. You've had a successful hatch or two so I value you advice.

So I can remove chicks once they are dry, but not when an egg is starting to zip.

The brooder should be set up at 95 deg, right. I'm using a 30 gal rubbermaid tub w/heatlamp, shelf liner covered with paper towel on the bottom.

I've read this stuff on here 100 times, and I thought I really knew it. I just don't have the confidence this time. I glad you guys are here.

Hi Bob,

Speckled is correct. Once the chick dries out it can go under a light in the
brooder. You're gonna have some chicks that pop out, dry fast and go nuts.
Others take a while. Then on day 22 you may choose to help a few out.
They will need to stay in the moist, warm bator for an extra day.

This last hatch for me was another heartbreak.
Started with 24

7 developed / 17 Xrayed or frozen or shook by USPS

2 died in shell around 18 days
2 died after assisted hatches, 1 in my hand

1 assisted had a tough first day but is getting better
2 Tried to kill me in my sleep last night

They are silkies...

Mine that had hatched were as close to the sides as they could get like they were too warm so I had DH lift the lid and I took them out quickly. They were much happier in the brooder. There was quite a bit of time between the hatches. I need a better thermometer if I do this again.

3 survivors. That's ok. Small groups are better. They are easier
to have in the house and get more attention.

Today is day 7 for 23 RIR/BR crosses and 1 EE cross. Those are local eggs
so I'm expecting good things. Gonna candle tonight.

Kristin, what is your grand total so far?

Congratulations! I haven't checked in for awhile...things have been busy...really busy...
turned my eggs a minute ago...and I heard a scratching noise....
I thought it was the styrofoam making a noise... but it wasn't!!

Say a prayer! I've been worried about my sister...had a bad dream last night called my mother, and she had had the same dream...the EXACT dream.

Well, Today is the last day I turn the eggs... watching every chance I get.

Hatching Blessings Be upon you!

Three here too PC. Love 'em all. The little serama X, the first to hatch, is in love with DS. Comes running the side of the brooder when he comes in the room. Follows his fingers around the outside. She's a real pip! The last to hatch that I helped is finally fluffying out and eating and drinking well at just over 24 hours old. I'm just thrilled that we got this far. We'll leave the last egg in to see if anything happens. Then I'll get to watch the hatch at school in April and decide if I want any of those. It will depend on what kind of eggs we get. The kid who will most likely donate them has a bunch of different breeds but they're not separated at all.

Finally getting around to updating; it's hard to be excited about chicks when I feel like crud, but I have 6 fluffy butts!

The first one, I was bad, and helped, but after pipping, and sitting in the same place for over 24 hours, I had a bad feeling. Looking at them now, I wonder if the eggs were just a bit too small. My girls have been laying since around November, so I thought I would be good to go. The eggs we have been getting the last week or so, have been quite a bit larger. Anyway, the first one seems fine, and the second one that hatched, did so in the time I was helping the first-I was sitting there watching him zip, it was amazing!

We ended up going over to my inlaws, and I brought supper over to cook (father in law just had his gallbladder out) when we came home, there were two more chicks there, greeting us!

The last two were pipped, so we got the boys to bed, I did a few trips downstairs to check, and finally fell asleep thanks to Nyquil, lol! Wake up in the morning and head straight down there, and the last two chicks were out. How awesome it was!

My only worry is for the second chick...his eyes, to me look smaller, and he seems like he is lost alot. I'm really wondering if he is blind, and if so-what to do. I really hate the idea of culling, unless he is suffering. My youngest son has Cerebral Palsy, and I deal with alot of meds, therapies, special equipment etc. I'm thinking I can probably handle a special needs chick, as long as he is comfortable/happy. My husband should be home soon with dinner-with me being sick, I just don't feel like cooking

But as soon as we get everyone settled down, I will post some pictures. Thanks for reading, if you made it this far, lol!

Oh, and I started with 16 eggs, 8 were clear-apparently my boy is slacking off

One I cracked open and found a small embryo, and the other I broke open last night, and it looked to be a fully formed chick, not breathing. That one, I left for a bit, but didn't hear any chipping, or peeping.
