Hi all, just an update. She isn't any better, but I think we are both tiring. I had to help her out of the hen house this morning. She was just standing there at the threshold looking out. She did manage to get in tonight. I fed her the spagetti squash out of my garden today

it is becoming a game to try to occupy the other hens so that she can have her treats...they see me walking towards her and they just know...and they don't want to miss out! I have to find them something else to do while she eats though...or else she wouldn't be fast enough to even get a taste! I'll let you know tomorrow. How is your hen doing? Any idea what is wrong with her? Pleasant dreams all....

Sorry your hen is not any better. But sure sounds like she is getting lot's of great treats. i sometimes have to pull a hen out by herself to give her treats. i have a couple who aren't too swift and always miss out on the goodies.

BTW - Suebee, i know you weren't calling me an airhead. Just brought back memories. AND i remember now who used to call me that, my sisters ex-husband! Anyhow, airheart isn't my last name anymore, so don't have to worry about it. Plus, that ex-husband is also a distant memory.

PLEASE hang in there with her! ... FOR her. Sounds like she is a fighter, so pleaaaase don't give up yet! There may be hope.
It sounds like you two are developing a great bond. You are a wonderful chicken mommy for being so kind to her!!

Okay...guess what you guys! I have found a little farm and feed store that I didn't even know existed...with a guy who seems to know about chickens. He sold me some different stuff for dusting the chickens with and to use in the hen house. He also sold me an antibiotic that is good for chickens and given through the water. He told me I might as well treat the whole flock. So, the boys cleaned the hen house good (you're all going to laugh at this one...I can't because I'm actually allergic to chickens, eggs, feathers), then I picked up each hen...turned them sideways so that my one son could sprinkle the dust on them all over! I'm feeling like this is the last chance and darn it...we're going strong on this last try. They are going to all be upset because I actually have to close them into their coop for the next five days...not able to free range like they are use to. The guy at the feed store says that if I need help...he can put her out of her misery for me. That made me "happy"...but realized I am not ready to give up yet. If we're going to do this...we're doing it right! Wish us luck...here goes nothing!

Oh My Goodness, I just read your thread and I applaud your zeal. I just started raising chickens in April and I would not know what to do either. It's too bad that these things happen to our animals but it's the way of the world I guess. I just wanted you to know there is one more chicken lady on your side.

I am sure you are thankful for your wonderful family for helping you with this matter and the coop/lice treatment. Thumbs up to them as well.

Lusty, what kind of dusting powder is it? I've never heard having to dust chickens and coop and keep them locked up for 3 days!

That situation may cause problems for the sick hen, as the others may pick on her.

Please find out the name of the dust so we can research it.

okay...stomach - crop....coop - yard around the hen house...guess I had better research my vocabulary! It is because of the antibiotics that they have to stay in their "yard" and not have total free range of our acreage. The dusting is just secondary. Like I said...we're hitting this hard, fast and straight on this time! To all the new people who are getting into raising chickens, I really didn't have a clue before I started this string. I have learned so much from everyone here and have felt like I wasn't alone in this whole thing. Until I found this site, I was just trying to find one person interested or knowledgeable on the phone. Nobody in my town would offer any words of wisdom other than "off with her head" or "can't you wring her neck?". Nobody thought it would be important to find out what was wrong with her. I am so thankful to everyone on this site for being my only outlet and helping at this time.

And yes...since I was a late teenager I have been allergic to eggs, chicken (eating), feathers, basically anything that is related to a bird. But I'm also allergic to dogs...and I have 2 of them. I'm one of those people that need their pets!
