Please...my pet chicken is eggbound...time is of the essence

Well, here's my report today. My hen is still with us. How is your hen Suebee? I don't know if the antibiotics are helping or not. But she is still here. I'm only here tomorrow morning and then I have to go out of town til Sunday. I guess my next update will be there...take care everyone!

Lusty, good news...what a real fighter she is!
My girl is still with us too. She's got green poop stuck on her vent and it's stinky. I'm going to give her a butt soak and get her all cleaned up today. She's slow, but eating and drinking.

We definitely have 2 "Super Hens".

Hi all,

I'm giving the hens Oxy Tetra - A. I mix it with their water for 5 days...leave it 2 days...then do another 5 days. I have to destroy their eggs from now until 60 hours after their last "fifth" day. I don't know if I'm just seeing things...but my sick hen is still eating and drinking. She doesn't seem to have her tail down as low. I may just be a wishful thinker. They sure are mad at me for not letting them out with the dogs! They have a nice large enclosed area...but not the same as an acre! Anyways...heading out of town now. Will update everyone on Sunday when I get back. I'm leaving them in the capable hands of my father...who babies animals.

Good morning
I came home late last night. I got up early this morning and saw that I still have my hen. There really isn't any change yet. That first bout of antibiotics does not seem to have done anything. But I had been told to give it for 5 days, rest 2, and administer for another 5 days. If she is no better then, I was not given any hope that she will recover. At that point, the decision will already be made. My hen and I will give in to fate and call it a good fight. Until then...onward and upward!

How is your hen holding out Suebee?

Thank you...that was a very interesting thread. My hen still walks around the yard, she still has a good appetite and drinks water on her own. The swollen area is low down and there aren't any feathers there. It feels quite warm to me, but not sure whether this is normal or not...my inexperience shows here. When I put pressure on the swollen area...I do not feel anything that resembles an egg, it feels soft ...but hard at the same time??? That makes no sense...but I can push it in...but it is firm....she has been like this now for 3 weeks. Wow...didn't realize it was that long already....

Until tomorrow....

Well, I think it made your situation sound a bit more hopeful, I was hoping it might buy her some time, because it really does sound like she may have the first problem they described, considering you don't feel anything egg-like. and she doesn't seem to be getting worse, just not really getting better. Maybe if you talk to the guy at the feed store about it, he might be able to feel her tummy and see if he thinks she is egg-bound???

Thank you Z....I don't think she is eggbound though...I've been told that she would be dead by now if she really was. The latest that sounded like a correct diagnosis was...that she is an "internal layer". Mind you...the last posting on that thread sounded hopeful. I honestly don't think I could put in a catheter and drain anything if my life depended on it...but if she makes it to the fall and maybe winter...and then re-absorbs the liquid...I would like that! It has given me some new hope...I start the antibiotics again tomorrow for another 5 days...we'll see what happens...thanks for your help!
