Hello everyone, I have a young cuckoo Maran rooster who is about 2 months old, and has seemed very healthy and strong, until this morning. I had gone on an outing and had asked a family member to lock up the chickens for me, she did, but she said she didn’t count the chicks. This morning another family member said that early this morning they had seen that roo hiding in a bush. I assumed he must have not been in the coop last night. I noticed this morning that he was acting a bit strange and looking a bit lethargic. I also noticed there was some bloody poo, but It looked like it was just shedded intesten lining which is normal. But later I found more bloody poop, and it was quite runny. I’ve separated him and I’m keeping an eye on him, but I’m pretty worried. Could it possibly be coccidiosis?? Please let me know if you have any ideas on what he could have. Thanks!

Yes, I would treat right away for coccidiosis. Symptoms are runny poops, sometimes blood in poop, lethargy, poor appetite, and general weakness. Treat with Corid (amprollium, amprol, coxoid) from a local feed or livestock store. Dosage is 2 tsp of liquid Corid, or 1.5 tsp (10 ml) per gallon of water for 5-7 days. Treat all birds at once, since it is a harmless drug. Afterward give vitamins and probiotics in the water. Don’t delay getting the Corid bcause time is key in recovery.

Corid (amprollium) is very good and available over the counter for treatment of coccidiosis. Occasionally, though there can be a resistant strain, and if you do not see improvement in a day or two, see a vet who might prescribe sulfa antibiotics. The Corid can be given undiluted 2-3 drops twice a day initially to give the sick bird a boost, if he is not drinking well.

Also, do you know how long it takes for the treatment to work? Unfortunately this morning it looks like most of the flock is infected. I’m making sure they all have good water but hopefully it’s not too late and they will all be getting well soon.

Okay. I got the corid as soon as I could, around 3 in the afternoon. I’ve been making sure that they drink and the one rooster is doing well with drinking the water. So far, I haven’t seen any improvement, but I’m hoping it will kick in soon. Thanks for all the info! I will give updates.
