Please read! Sick chicken with bloody poop

It should help symptoms within a day or two. What signs are you seeing now with the others? If you have the liquid Corid give all of the chickens 2 drops of undiluted Corid orally twice a day. If you have the powder Corid mix 1.5 tsp into 10 ml of water, and that is equivalent to undiluted liquid Corid. You can also mix some of their feed with Corid medicated water to get more into them. If at any time you want to get a fecal test checked by a vet to make sure they have coccidiosis, go ahead and see a vet with some fresh droppings. They may prefer to prescribe a sulfa antibiotic, just in case the coccidiosis is resistant to Corid.

This morning I looked in the coop and noticed that there was bloody poop everywhere. I saw another chick poop and it was runny and bloody, and some seem to not be as energetic and most will eat a little bit but aren’t chowing down their food like they usually do. One chick is especially weak and definitely pooping blood. I had let the rooster that was the first to have signs out to see if he wanted to peck around but ended up just standing fluffed up next to the house, and that chick was snuggling next to him, so I put them both back in our brooder so they could be a little dryer and warmer and I could keep an eye on them. Most of the chicks are still running around together, but I’m pretty sure they are infected. I’ve done some research, but some people say one thing and another will say something different about certain things like whether dogs can get coccidiosis or not from chickens, and if the sickness can last on the ground for a while or not. They all have the Corid in their water, but I will also try giving them a few diluted drops like you’ve said. Also, all the chicks (11 chicks) are the same age as the first roo, and we also have 3 older hens who are over a year. I also have 7 Guineas, can those get effected? I’m almost positive it’s coccidiosis because all the chicks are getting symptoms, and the rooster has nearly all of the symptoms of coccidiosis.

I think I would take some droppings to your regular vet, or ask for some Albon, sulfadimethoxine, or sulfa antibiotics. The Corid may be enough, but this sounds like a big outbreak, and if the strain is resistant to Corid, you may lose some birds. The older birds should have tolerance to the coccidia in the soil. But treat any birds that you think need it.

Chickens have different strains of coccida than dogs or any other animals. Turkeys have different strains, but not sure about guineas.

Okay. I will work

okay. I’ll work on that. Sadly, I just checked on my rooster and he didn’t make it. Very sad about that as he was my dream rooster, and very sweet and cuddly. I will try to talk to a vet and see what I can do. We live out in the country and there aren’t a ton of places around here, but I will try to find a vet as soon as possible.

Oh no, I am sorry for your loss. Could there have been anything they could have gotten into such as tiny pieces of glass or something else sharp that could cut anything in the GI tract? I would definitely try to get some sulfadimethoxine which has different brand names (Albon, others.) Maybe just call the vet’s office, and ask if they can prescribe sulfa antibiotics because you suspect a bad strain of coccidia. I also might refrigerate the rooster’s body to get a necropsy to look for coccidiosis, or whatever killed him. He may have been sick first, and then stressed out from being out overnight, but who knows?

I just thought about the possibility of rat poison causing bleeding as well. Could they have eaten poison or a mouse that had eaten poison? Sorry for all of the scary suggestions, since it may just be coccidiosis, but I just hope that you don’t have any more deaths.

Thank you, I appreciate all your time! We don’t have any rat poison anywhere outside and as for sharp objects, I don’t think there was anything near him. I did notice that he had water on his beak and nose which makes me suspicious, could he have chocked? Not really sure, but definitely very sad. I will try giving the vet a call first thing tomorrow morning and see what they can do. It’s possible that he was infected for a few days before I had known about it or something and maybe it had been too late by the time I got the treatment, who knows.

Update - This morning I took a look in the coop and all the droppings actually look pretty normal! They are all acting healthy, except that one chick is still a little fluffed up but I’d running around. Great news!

Yes treat him...BUT, that is more than just cocci blood! If he was left out all night and found hiding under a bush I would venture to say something got a hold of him and that is internal bleeding from trauma...i would go over every inch of him and look for bruising and injuries...sorry your having this problem hun

Okay. Yeah, very strange. I’m not sure if he was left out or not, that’s just what a family member said, but they weren’t sure either. He didn’t make it, so there could have been another cause for his illness as well.
