We have finally gotten 6 chicks for the first time. We picked up from a local breeder, straight run.
They are 4-ish weeks old at this point. She had Barred Rock and RIR males. Barred Rock, Buff Orp and RIR females. These three barred chicks are my constant question......two pics of each. Roo or pullet?
#1 and 2 feathered early with early tail feathering but #2 is HUGE compared to all the other chicks and they both seem light in color? Mostly yellow sturdy legs on all three with very mild gray wash.
#3 is smaller with shorter tail and less feathering but also could be some number of days younger 🤔
Help, I'm hoping they aren't all destined for freezer camp 😬

That's a lot of white for a female barring. Properly bred barred Plymouth rocks, are odd to be sold straight run because it should be obvious at hatch what the gender is.
I think they're just randomly bred with the roos and hens so she didn't want to make any guarantees. I imagine a lot of hers are already crossed too.
I knew they probably weren't "hatchery" pure but now the mystery of it is driving me crazy 😂🤪

@speckledhen if you have time could you give me your verdict over here on these maybe "mutt" barred rock babies. ☺️
The top left is male. The top right looks like a pullet so far, definitely a mix, not pure BR. If it's a pullet, I'd say she has a BR sire and a mom of a different breed. Sexing mixes is sometimes confusing. If her mom was BR and her sire was a red/gold male, she would be solid black with white or goldish smut on her chest, a black sexlink.
On pure BR pullets, the black bars are twice as thick as the white bars. On pure BR cockerels, the white bars are twice as wide. Hope that helps. It really does matter if it's a cross or straight BR. Crosses are not as easy to sex, generally. By five weeks old, the males will have pink combs already. Hope that helps! I can't tell if some are repeat pictures of the same chick, but using those criteria, you should be able to assess them better. Good luck!

Thank you!!
There's three different chicks, two pictures each. The pics are numbered but it doesn't show up very well on the thumbnails 😜
It sounds like I need to work on my patience and see what happens! They're pretty nice chicks so far. They sit on our laps in the evening and watch TV with us! And I have a home for a friendly roo if it turns out I need to rehome anyone.
I'll update this post someday when they show themselves 😁

So this one could be a black sex link? It's hard to tell with the shadows but she has a little gold on her chest. We have two of these.
And the last one is COMPLETELY different and I love *her*? coloring.

I can't tell with the picture on the first one, too much glare and shadow, but could be a BSL, yeah. The buff one, though, looks like a New Hampshire or Rhode Island Red chick, but could be a cross of RIR and Buff Orpington. Hard to say at this point with the choices you mentioned.

Thank you for responding. This has been such a fun learning experience so far!

All pictured here are cockerels. #2 isn't a Barred Rock, he's got a pea comb.
