Plymouth Rock thread!

Well, on the note of broodies since my first one broke after a few days last month we have had no other till now. Two days ago I notice 2 hens on nests. One in one box that was not normal. Yesterday I counted only 10 out and had to close up coop since wind shut door and I did not open poop door and she was in nest. Last night I was growled at from same hen. So I pulled wood egg and put some real ones under her. Now that was not easy she was not helping by standing and even pecked at me. So here is

hoping she sticks with it.

That's reassuring. We are so new to this (never even really been around chickens), but can hopefully make it work.

Sexing? Can anyone tell me the correct way to sex Barred Rock chicks? I have 9, some have small white spots on their heads whereas others have a larger or elongated white mark on top of their cute little heads. One is so tame that he will climb in to my hand and wait to be petted....

My BR is easily the family favorite though I think she borders on needy. She'll peck your pant legs if you don't take the time to bend over and pet her. The Production Reds I have squat for the family too, we can pick them up and are docile. When we introduced new chickens last fall the Reds tended to be harder on the newbies, really holding on to feathers but are lambs around the kids. Have 3 and 5 year old girls here that play fairly nice with the chickens free ranging. The chickens know to fly/run out of the way of girls on tricycles and such.

They do look a little rooish. No dark legs and the white spot is quite large. They can have a large spot if its all together and they can be pullets. I would be doubtfull too. Gloria Jean
