Plymouth Rock thread!

They are such a hoot! I thought I was all prepared for them and then they got here... Lol! I think either the larger of the two SLWs or the BR is going to be the boss lady, they go back and forth on who is going to be the bossiest chick, lol. The BR is so much bigger than the SLWs too! Okay, I hear peeping and my brooder thermometer has tanked tonight (new batteries didn't help at all) so I better go check on them.

I went out to check for eggs today. This is what I found. I think it personifies the expression "dumb as a box of rocks!"

I just want to introduce myself to everyone on this thread. I'm Erin and in a month or so I will be the first time mom to a couple of Barred Plymouth Rock chicks, plus a couple of Rhode Island Reds.

Our flock will start with five, day-old chicks. We have been building our coop and need to start on the run. I have two small children, 1 yo and 3 yo, who are pretty excited to get chickens.

I selected the two breeds I did because I heard they were hardy in the cold, good layers, and pretty docile. However I read something this morning that said both breeds are very aggressive.

Can anyone weigh in with a little on their birds' personalities? My husband and I will be the caretakers and don't plan to let our children handle the birds at all unless they've proven themselves to be careful and responsible, but I don't want to worry that a free-ranging bird will go after either of my kids. The last thing I want is for kids and birds to live in fear of each other.

And thanks for all the awesome pictures of your girls (and boys).

I don't have any reds but I had 2 barred Rick chicks that were lost to a dog and they were the sweetest. One would follow me around and let all my kids pick her up. She would purr when we pet her and she would hop up in my lap. I cried when she was killed. We replaced her with two br pulleys that are 5 months old. They are also very sweet but shy. They do nit seem ti be aggressive to any if the other chickens and they are even good with the 5 week chicks. They are still scared of the kids but are in no way mean.
