Whites are sports off Barred Rocks. Some breeders mate them back to improve a trait the white has the Barred one may need. I get a white sport thrown about 1 per 100 hatched. My 1910 standard shows Male 45° and females 35°. There was a huge discusssion in the early 30's about the change in the tail angle in some Reliable Poultry Journals and Plymouth Rock Monthly's. I'll have to hunt that article down and post it. The 1919 Plymouth Rock Standard states the same thing the 1910 Standard says. If someone has a 1940ish standard, it probably changed there. I'll check on the Rock forum to see who has that info. Yard full of Rocks is correct on his statement about 1998.
Paula, I do believe your roo is a bit too coppery to be standard. Nice-sized wattles though!
By the way, WHAT is that rooster to the right of him? He looks like a cross between a Polish and a Dominique. Come to think of it, Jethro's barring seems to be more resemblant of Dominique than Barred Rock.
Got a question. What has been the time after moult that your hens started laying again? I have 3 right now that were in moult back in Nov that are now laying again. I have another 3 now in moult and two just got done with moulting. The 3 I know that are laying again they are laying large now and darker eggs. We are still getting either a dozen or up to 14 which is nice.
Hubby going back to work after a pulled muscle so he will sell off 3 dozen we had on hold for one person. Thank goodness we were running out of counter space. We gave away 3 dozen to neibor yesterday. He has another 4 to sell at work later in week. I can not imagine what it will be like when all 21 start laying.
Depends on the hen. Had two BRs who didn't lay for several months. My oldest BR hen (4 yrs old) started laying again yesterday after taking off one month..and that poor girl has terrible arthritis in her feet, too! She just keeps on going, that Lexie.
Has anyone got notes of when there Rocks went broody? I have a few sitting in nest boxes but it is real cold here still. Just wondering how early or close to spring they might start being broody.
Not one of mine has ever gone broody, though a couple of them have a mother who was a constant broody (owned by a friend) and one of the daughters of one of mine has been broody. Not one of mine here have ever brooded or even threatened to do so.
my rocks are about 23 weeks old now. This is my first time ever owning chickens and am trying to be patient waiting for the eggs...could anyone give me an idea of when they may start, like some signs that it's getting close or something like that. It has been really cold here and I am thinking that they like seeing me squirm so they are holding off til spring. Any help would be awesome. Thank you all ahead of time.
would it being so cold here keep them from laying for the first time?
I LOVE my BR's... I just got the first egg from my 20 week olds yesterday!! Little bitty thing it was!! Boy but I sure like the pics of the Blue & Splash Rocks!! Might have to look into that later on!! Geez... If my hubby heard that he'd probably kill me!!
(Here's my 4 older ones enjoying their dust bath!!)

Comb wattles and face will be a real bright red( lipstick red) when they are getting close to laying. i had some of mine start laying at 20 weeks some later and some not yet. Alot depends on the lines as well as food and weather. They will lay but your cold might have alot to do with it right now.
