I would hesitate to call them barred rocks, but I have had them. They were friendly active birds, and they were great layers. They did tend to fly when they were younger and lighter. There was a couple of smaller hens that would clear a four foot fence after they matured, but most stopped (or were not able to). They are good layers (even in winter) of medium large light brown eggs for a backyard laying flock. I would not recommend them for exhibition or breeding on with them and call them barred rocks. We called them production rocks. There is nothing wrong with them if that is what you want.
Thanks! That is pretty much what I wanted. I am not going to breed them. I just want a few for eggs. I live close to neighbors, so I didn't want to get ones that tend to fly. Winter laying will be great!
Well, we are getting an incubator due to weather and other hens. So far in our hatching we have 3 chicks that have survived. Really need that other coop for main flock. Hens that are not moms are the main problem. They keep getting into hatching nest box and stepping on new borns. I have pic up on blog of 2 survivors the thrid one I found today in nest box. Humodity is been all over the place due to major storms blowing thru. This has not helped hatchings at all. We were lucky to stay out of tornados last week. Hope everyone is having a better spring hatch.
This year we have already lost 3 adult hens. I will be hatching out replacements to build flock up. I have orders standing for fall for chicks local too. Will not sell eggs due to to few hens right now. Good news is neibor wants to switch over to my Partride rocks instead of what they have. Older boy is really into chicken and fell in love with mine. I am giving them my other rooster this summer since my main one is so hard on him. He gets chased when trying to eat or even when coming into coop at night.
We have a show this weekend. So I will get to meet alot on BYCers even from out of state. How is everyone chickens doing so far this year?
I have 35 Columbian Rock (LF) chicks on the ground so far. 20 more in the incubator and plan to hatch at least 2 dozen more after that. So far I have been VERY lucky. Only a very few fatalities. I also have 14 BR chicks (also LF) on the ground as well. Will be culling that group down to a trio or quad to keep and breed from next Spring. Cocci really was bad here last yr and I hatched earlier this year to try to get ahead of it. Heat and humidity tend to make it so much worse.
My grown birds have done great so far this spring. Laying like crazy although no "broodies" as of yet. I have only lost 1 grown bird in the past 6-8 months and I believe that was caused by an internal laying issue.
Hope everyone is well....dodging storms here again today but NOTHING like the chaos of last week.
Glad to hear the storms are normal and not crazy there, its been extremely cold in Wi, too cold to put my 5 almost 6 week olds outside. grrrrrrrrr crazy weather this year, I might be able to plant my garden by July hehehe.
I finally heard back from P.P today that the hatchery my mystery chicks came from carries 2 white breeds besides cornish cross. White rocks and white Wyandottes, I updated pictures and started another name this breed thread here https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=497519
I'm hoping you guys can take a look at this thread and see if these are indeed white rocks, to me I think the 5 bigger chicks with a higher comb are WR, the other 2 with flatter combs smaller and fluffier are WW, please take a look and see if you know if that is indeed what my mystery chicks are finally ? TY all for all your help and guess's for before and for now. TYVVM Kim

I've had a problem with that this year as well. I haven't lost any birds or chicks and I have about 35 chicks at the moment. I give them Ambrol the day they hatch for the first week and then sulfasomething a month later, and then alternate as needed after that. If a bird starts to lay around too much they come into the house and the water intake gets monitored.
I've been hatching a few Ameraucanas and mostly Silver Pencil Plymouth Rocks. I'll be selling a lot of them as they mature after I pick out a few keeper birds. (If anyone is interested in a few chicks them let me know.)

HennyPen, what is AMBROL? Thats a new one to me, but maybe I need to look into it. I feed medicated chick starter until 16 weeks and put Corid in the water as I see signs/symptoms

What protein % is the feed, Scott?
Punky....I use the Chick Starter from Tucker Milling. It is 18%. They get this exclusively for 3 weeks (plus some scrambled eggs daily). At 3 weeks when I place them in a grow up pen, they get Chick Starter and then I change to a mix of chick starter and SUPER lay pellets (22%) at about 6-8 weeks. Slowly wean them from the Chick Starter to about 16 weeks, then SUPER lay pellets up to POL. At POL they get a mix of regular layer (16%) and SUPER Layer (22%), giving me a steady 19% protein feed
I buy it from this website as well. If you ever have any bird problems, this person is VERY helpful.
As to the medicated feed, he told me not to feed it since you want the birds to develop a natural immunity to the disease.
My feed is the unmedicatd chick starter what ever that is. Once they leave the coop they get 20% crumbles and then as they mature even more they get the game bird conditioner which looks like a wild bird seed. Lots of different kinds of seeds.
