Plymouth Rock thread!

Check out my Silver Pencil Plymouth Rocks. I sold a trio and the buyers will get their choice of birds.

I started hatching 1-4-11 and just stopped a few days ago. The birds in the pictures are 1-4-11 to 2-10-11 hatches

Thank you Jeremy. I have been eyeing the pictures trying to compare the progess of the birds I have to others. This is the earliest hatch I have seen. You have remarkable birds. These guys have more potential as meat birds than I had anticipated. Do you weigh your birds?

The birds are meat birds for sure. Yes I weigh all the birds. I will cull all the birds that will not meet the SOP in weight.

I have finished hatching for the Spring. Will resume in the fall. BUT, I have 60 "ish" Columbian Rock LF birds on the ground. I will be keeping 5 cockerels (+/-) and 5 pullets (+/-) so I will have some to share this Fall.

Please let me know if you are interested in a pair or a trio and I will see about getting them to you

Thanks

Scott

Good morning! I have a really hard time looking at birds via video; I do much better with still pics. I will say that for the pullets, I most definitely do not like 48 & 49 (for sure) but I DO like 43, 46, and 50. For the cockerels, I do not like 3, but I do like 5 & 7. It's way early to make cull decisions, though.

The biggest issue with this variety is size right now (well, there are lots of issues, but size is the most important in most lines). I have been struggling with a good underline as well, which is difficult to get on these guys. I have two hens that have a super nice underline, but one has a bit of a cushion (not preferred) and the other is a bit too small; however, they are the best two I have and they are what I'm moving forward with. The underline should look like a bowl - from the base of the neck undernath and back to the base of the tail, should be a nice, uniform curve.

See this gal? She has a very nice underline:

Here is an example of a bad underline:

In the pullets, you have a few with issues of failing in the lacing at the front of the neck - where more white shows than lacing. However, I have been told by more than one judge that the most difficult thing to get into this variety is that nice underline. So, for me, I have worked on that, and chosen the two with good underlines that are the largest in my flock. As we increase their size and set the underline, they will look more & more to type, and we can move on and correct the other, smaller issues.

I would give these much more time before you make any decisions...just me personally! They are lovely, you have a very nice start!

Thanks so much for sharing pics!

Wynette,

I don't think that bird has a great underline. Looks real fluffy, like a Wyandotte.

This bird has a nice body type, but I think it needs a liitle longer body. By "Ducktang":

Good luck,

I would like to respectfully disagree just a bit (not trying to start any type of disagreement)

As it has been explained to me, Wynettes bird DOES have a good underline. What you are seeing is "loose feathering" which I too am fighting on my Columbian Rocks in LF. The feathers should be "less fluffy" and conform more tightly to the body. However, type (again, as explained to me by members of the Plymouth Rock Fanciers Club) is associated with the shape of the bird. LONG back and GRAVY BOWL shape which Wynette's bird does have. The experts seem to agree that shape/type is THE most important factor and then issues like comb points, leg coloring, feather quality, and WAY down the list is actual feather color/pattern.

Just my $0.02 for what its worth

Here's one of my hens. I think she looks pretty good when compared to that breed standard photo. She turned 1 year old in May.
