Plymouth Rock thread!

Seems like there is some of those Canadian bred Columbian Rocks in the Georgia area if I'm not mistaken. Maybe I need to get in touch and see if that guy will sell me some eggs ..

I don't think he's going to give up any pullets. lol We're getting eggs. I'm only about 15 miles away so hopefully the hatch rate will be good since thre won't be shipping. I've had terrible luck with shipped eggs.

I do have a question: Why do you want to cross the spprs to colombians and not barred? One way I can see losing the penciling to white and the other way I can see losing the penciling t barred. Which is "easier" to dig out of the hole? lol

I know this isn't a PR, but here's what happened when an ameraucana hen was accidently bred to a sppr rooster when he jumped the fence:

As you can see, there's no penciling except a hint on the neck feathers. What would happen if I bred this hen back to a sppr? How many generations will it take to get the consistant penciling back?

It never hurts to experiment. However, I wouldn't experiment with a non plymouth rockbird. I think it would take a long time to get your TYPE back using an Americauna. I crossed a BR pullet to a CR roo. I got 2 black pullets. I will be breeding them back to my best CR cockerel

Worst thing that could happen is you end up with a few extra "Sunday dinners"

Oh no, this isn't an experiment, it was an oops. I'm jut curious how many generations it takes to get penciling back when a cross ends up without it.

I do not know about the cross to CR with sppr. That was suggested by Walt and seemed like a good idea to me. I hope he will show back up and give us a good answer. My guess is-- penciling is needed in a double dose to show up. I think it is that way with barring too. If you cross that ee back to a sppr, my guess is that you should get 50% penciled and 50% of something else that carries a recessive pencil gene?? I'm thinking that it would work the same way with CR. The 2nd generation crossed back to sppr should result in 50% sppr and 50% with a sppr recessive. I hope Walt or someone else can set us straight. I would also like to know why he thinks it is better to use the CR instead of the barred. I have some really good quality barreds that I would prefer to use. They are slow feathering and have crisp barring. I'm thinking that that might help with keeping the the lacing on the sppr. Otherwise, I'm going to go hunting for the yard full of CRs.

Tigercreek and Henny

I just checked the chicken color calculator and it seems you CAN use a barred rock to improve your SPPRs IF there are no hidden genetics. A SPPR roo over a BR hen "should" produce solid black pullets and black barred males. Males would be culls to your program.

Mating the solid black pullets back to a SPPR roo would through some SPPR males and females, in addition to some others. Now, it gives me NO idea as to how the penciling will look, etc, etc. Only that it will get you back to the SPPR "pattern". My guess is they will be pretty rough colored and you would have to refine it from there.

Might try it both ways (with a Col Rock and with a Barred Rock) and see which gets you better results. Perhaps one will get you better type (i.e. the Barred) and the other might help with color/pattern (i.e. Columbian)

Gotta remember there are VERY few folks working with SPPRs in LF so you guys would be the guinea pigs.....but who knows, "science experiments" are fun!!

Have a great day

Link to the color calculator is here if you dont have it
