Plymouth Rock thread!

I was originally thinking slipped wing, but after reading up and looking again, I think split wing describes it better. Since he only has four primary feathers, I'm hoping I just caught him mid-molt during his grow out. I'm going to check him again and see if there is any evidence of additional primaries having been there, or growing in.

Maybe, but since it is on both sides the same, I would not think it was a molt thing. Any wing thing like that is a cull from a breeding program. It is very hard to breed it out.

When chickens molt wing flight feathers(primaries) they molt them in sequence(1-10 so they would still be able to fly, one of mother natures great adaptive/evolving qualities at work here) it is possible that both feathers in the same area on both wings are molted out at the same time. Look for any sign of a new feather or a follicle there in the specific area before throwing the axe at it. These slow feathering(fine barred) types are very slow to grow in new feathers.

Thats what I'm hoping to find, probably will not get to it until the weekend. I wouldn't take an axe to him until he's a least seven months old due to the slow growing nature of these non production type birds. Also I have about $25 into him. If I'm spending $25 for dinner I'm having steak.

I wouldn't suggest you axe him either. I hope he gets those feathers :fl
