x2. you'll see many cuckoos over there. I had a khaki cuckoo once, but lost him before I could hatch any out. There are some out there working on both chocolate and khaki cuckoos still though as far as I know

Does anyone have any information about Barred Rocks, I have Barred Rock Bantams and I wanted to learn some stuff for showmanship. Any good facts would be very much appreciated. Helpful info would be the varieties and combs other than the 6 basic. Also, there are... idk, like different categories? It was something I had remembered for showmanship but some of them were like Mediterranean, Oceanic... I cannot think of what it would be called!?!

Not sure if I will answer your question correctly or if I understand it correctly but I'll make an attempt to possibly clear some confusion:
1. Barred Rocks are a variety within a specific breed known as "Plymouth Rocks". There are several varieties within this breed those being; barred, white, partridge, black, columbian, blue, buff, silver pencilled as listed in the APA Standard of Perfection.
2. Bantams and Large fowl are grouped into six classifications according to where they were develped specifically large fowl and comb type and leg type in bantams the classifications are as follows: Large Fowl; American Class, Asiatic Class, English Class, Mediterranean Class, Continental Class and All Other Standard Breeds Class. In Bantams the classes are: Game Bantam Class, Single Comb Clean Legged Class (Plymouth Rocks are in this class), Rose Comb Clean Legged Class, All Other Combs Clean Legged, Feather Legged and Bantam Duck (ABA).

My recommendation to you is to go to the American Poultry Association and American Bantam Association web sites and order the soft cover Standards which are less expensive and study these books this will provide a wealth of information for showmanship competition. The APA also publishes a showmanship guide that can be purchased at a minimal expense that condenses the information in the standard down to a more manageable study guide for the showmanship student.

Blessings,

Bo

Thank you so very much for your help. That was exactly what i was looking for! I don't know how you understood what I meant, but you did and I am very thankful and appreciative for your generosity. Hopefully I will do well with this knowledge during chicken showmanship at the 4-H fair this year!

I noticed you are from New Jersey, how did you fare through Sandy? Hope you and your family were spared any of the destruction I have seen on the news.
If you have anymore questions feel free to PM me, some answers may be too long to put in a forum thread and may bore others. I am more than willing to help youth learn more about poultry, it is you guys that will pick up the mantle and carry it forward when us old folks are gone.

Blessings,

Bo

Okay she is determined to be broody, so I gave her some of her eggs and two that I am not sure are hers. They were in the fridge, then another one appeared today and she was sitting on it. So I took them out of the fridge, marked all of them and put them back under her. Total of 5 (I think, might be 4). My thoughts are this, people buy fertile eggs from Trader Joe and hatch them, those are much older. These eggs are at max 2 weeks old. I do not need more chicks, but would like to see how well she does, might as well see now, not when I really need her to be. So wish me luck, but I do understand 100% that chances are NONE will hatch. I do live in TX if they hatch it will be right before Christmas, we don't hit our freezing temps until January, so they should be fine........ Again, not holding my breath!

My young Barred Rocks- coming along nicely!

Glad they are coming a long nicely, Barred rocks are such hardy birds (especially in the cold). I'm raising some Barred Plymouth rocks as well but they already fifteen weeks.

Here they are:
