Here is a picture of one of the cockerels I am conditioning. He is a little smaller than his brother. I will take pictures of him tomorrow. Nice tight feathered and will really look good when he gets to be a year old next May. Late hatched chick grown down here makes them about a half to one pound under weight. He still weights a pound over weight so I am not worried. May be to small to show in the Mid West they have to be much bigger. bob
Love the look of some of the barred birds on this thread. I am looking for some quality birds for my girls who are starting in 4-h. We are planning to hatch ome this spring and would like to grade up our tick for our fall fairs. Love the old black nd white pics. I got nostalgia genes I guess.
Just this year I got five Barred Plymouth Rock chicks from a hatchery (along with five Cherry Eggers). As of now they are laying (started around mid to late November) lovely brown eggs and holding up well to the cold. The best thing I love about them is their personalities; when they were just barely a month-old, one of them, "Falcon", repeatedly perched on arms, legs, heads and the edge of the brooder (and still tries today on my head even though she's a big girl). They all love to chase cats, squirrels and even interacted with a young deer (frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if a neighbor's dog ran into the yard and they chased it off
).
Here are all five of the Barred Rock girls:

I love looking at pictures of your flocks. There is a wide variety within this breed and I think most of us are satisfied with the temperament of our pr birds. I have a two year old sppr rooster that is very calm around people and four more roos that will be one year old next May. Does a rooster's temperament usually stay the same or do they tend to get cranky as they get older? I am wondering how long I should keep a rooster for breeding? Do any of you have experience keeping older roosters?
I got a mesage from a lady a few days ago and did not answer it. She wanted to compair her Barred Rocks for color to the ones I had in my computer from people who where members of the Plymouth Rock Club which I was the past Secetary. Here is some pictures I found and will tell her to come here and look at them. The two bottom pictures are the old Frank Reese line, the third one is Marvin Stukler line I think thats his name from Arizona and the other is a line thats gone up in smoke the Paul Hardy line which was a good one about 8 years ago.
The females on the bottom have a nice barring on thier necks, this was what E B Thompson called Riggletts. His line was called the Rigglett line in the 1920s. These girls are suppose to be from that old blood line that Frank got from Ralph Sturegeon 50 years ago. Hope this helps you compair yours from what you got from Tractor Supply. They are a whole different type or breed of Rock than what you have. Yours are what I got as a boy in the early 1960s.
