Plymouth Rock thread!

Plymouth Rock Experts, I need your help! I would love to add PR's to my flock but they're hard to find. I found someone selling a couple but I need help as I don't know what they should look like as young pullets. They are 12 weeks old. The first is being sold as a Partridge Rock. I'm concerned this is a roo but I don't know how fast they should be maturing. Anyway, is her plumage correct? She looks like she'd be a darker variety. The ones in back I'm told are Red Pencil Rocks? Anyone heard of those? They're supposed to be just a lighter red version of a Partridge. Does the plumage pattern fill in as they get older or since they're already feathered, is this what they'll look like as an adult?

Here's another picture of the lighter one. I love the partridge/pencil markings but I want them all over. Will she fill in with color or is that it?

Well, there is no such thing as a red pencil rock. Not part of the standard for the breed. As far as the so call partridge I would not buy it. Wing shape is wrong. I can not say too much on body do to stance but if the chick stands like photo it is wrong also. But it is a female from the looks of it.

If your intention is to have some pretty birds that add some eye candy to your flock, these would be just fine; however, if you are wishing to breed, you would not want to use these. IMO, they are mix. And, there is no such thing as a "red penciled rock" - someone MAY be working on a new variety, but if that's the case here, they have a very long way to go. Did the seller indicate these were project birds? They are definitely pretty, just not purebred partridge.

My intention is to only have eggs for my family but I wanted a pretty bird to look at too. I have a Barred Rock and have fallen in love with the Plymouth Rock breed and would like to include more in different varieties, hence searching for a Partridge.

So it doesn't matter to me if they are "mutts". My main concern is : #1...is the darker one really a pullet?!?!?

and #2: if I get one of the lighter ones as well, will the pencil/striping/barring/markings fill in on the solid color feathers or will she always be half striped, half solid?

I believe the darker one is a pullet. When dealing with crosses, it's difficult to know for sure what they'll look like when they mature, but I would suspect they'll always be part penciled/part solid. They are pretty gals!

When my Smarty Pants turned out to be a Rooster I realized how light his feathers were. I didn't know the Hens were dark and the Rooster was light. I know now. Also, his inquisitive personality should have been a clue for me at only 1wk old, he was totally a Rooster. Beautiful...Have fun!

These chicks bought on Halloween 2012, I found out one of them was Smarty Pants Rooster at 1 month he is much lighter than the Hen Jessica she is to his left ... she was much bigger and he was just a stinker. He had such scrawny legs and then I read up on Hens and Roosters and found out that he was definitely a Rooster from his description. That was so funny to us! A first in 9 years. The next set of photos are him and Jessica with LaLa and ChaCha the light Brahmas at 1 month and you can really see his colors change, that should have been a clue. I thought I had a different breed...hahahaha The larger photos are him at 4 months and the Crowing "gargling" began...very sweet both of them. We adopted Smarty Pants out...
