Plymouth Rock thread!

I'm having a hard time sexing my 3 week old barred rock. The large spot on the back of the head is what first scared me, but her legs have dark markings which is more typical in females. I need help with the barring though. please help!!! We already had one of the 2 chicks we got back in may turn out to be a rooster, and it upset my kids so much I would hate for it to happen again.

looking pullet to me at this point.

I'd guess pullet as well, with just a larger than normal head spot. The spot is very regular on the edges, though, which is more of a pullet trait than a cockerel one. My own late departed Lexie had a huge head spot as well, but lived to be 5 years old, mother of many chicks. She was even cockerel colored, as light as her sons. Most BRs can be easily sexed by color traits, but then you get one that wants to keep you guessing, or one that you think is a pure BR but is only 1/2, therefore having only one barring gene, being a pullet colored male.

Thank you all so much for your help, you have put my mind more at ease. I found out before that sometimes it's just a waiting game. We were still unsure about my leghorn until he started to practice crowing lol. I will keep you posted. Thank you again!

I posted this with my phone, but it doesn't seam to have gone through. I hope it doesn't show up twice.

Do barred rocks have a bump on the inside of their middle toe? Frances has one on each foot. Is this a barred rock thing, a chicken thing, or an abnormality?

Anyone have any recommendations for Silver Plymouth Rock breeders? Preferably in the NW? I want to add a second line and bought some eggs from some from someplace called DieFly Ranch in CA but since the eggs have currently been in mail 4+ days that was a horrible experiment.

I'd prefer to not outcross to another color, but may end up doing just that.

Wynette (BYC moderator here) has some of the best I've seen....unfortunately she is in Michigan, not the NW, but she is working diligently on them, and has some breeding plans in place to make some very big steps especially in size. If yours came from Diefly Ranch, I "bet" those originated with Cheryl Cohen, who got a large part of her start from Wynette

Probably more than you asked for....but there ya go
