Plymouth Rock thread!

Question for everyone: I have 5 White Rock hens that we "rescued"(a couple of them had raw rears with no tail feathers), they've been in quarantine for 4 weeks now. We wormed them & I've been putting BraggsACV in their water everyday. Some of them still seem to have runny poop & several always have dirty butts & a couple seem too red looking to me. They started laying about 4 days ago finally. Is this breed just always dirty looking in the rear or is there something still amiss? I can put a picture but I thought it might be too graphic  also I'm finding some eggs with soft spots in them but also some very nice eggs too

Hi Jockeyeba,

I am sure you have seen this thread, but if you haven't, I highly reccomend it. Beekissed recently took a bunch of poorly neglected chickens, and has slowly brought them back to earth with good ol fashioned, experienced chicken husbandry. She emphasizes exactly what you are interested in correcting, and with the help of FF and other sound natural advise has seen a change in her flock. It takes a rather large time commitment to get through it, I am half way through, ,but I know it is far worth the read.

Co incedentally, her favorite breed is the White Rock. In this post, she stresses how superior their feathering is, and how clean and soft, and thick they are, so as she has had these chickens for years, I don't think that is part of the white rock nature. Good Luck with them, and don't be afraid to ask Bee anything,, she is so very helpful. Take pictures now, so you can have the after's to reflect on! Thank goodness for people like you taking in rescues... that is wonderful!

Qoute from Beekissed from the above thread.....

"These WR stay so clean and fluffy compared to the other white breeds we have had..they simply are a breed in a class of their own. Their feather quality is the softest and thickest of any breed I've ever had and I can honestly say I've not had any chicken with a more soft, luxurious feathering than the WRs. Second to them were the BAs and BOs, though neither of these breeds have as good of feathering and skin. " In fact I would post those pictures on that thread... she will tell you what she thinks. Good Luck!

ps...I have worked all my life in the Thoroughbred racing industry, and your avatar caught my eye!"

I have one Plymoth Rock. She was born "in the summer". She is huge but no eggs yet. The Dominidkers she was with are all laying now. What do you think? The shorter days? I am keeping a light on so they have 14 hours of light.
