What Illia said! I have to especially "second" the suggestion to look at shows--I think the best place to learn about the ideal for a particular breed is a poultry show. See the birds in person, chat with the breeders, and pick the brains of the old-timers that have been doing this forever!
Depending on what varieties you are looking for, I may have hatching eggs you might be interested in, or could suggest other breeders who might.
