We are centrally located and they tolerated our -13 just fine. I think one of the biggest problems people have is when they freak out too much and seal up their chicken coops air tight..... then they get respiratory infections that mimic a cold and can even die from this. If in doubt I would use a heat lamp in the coop or just pack the straw in.

OK, I got a little freaked out today when I read on Meyer's site that Polish do not do well in the cold. In your opinion(s) are they cold hardy? I have 3 of them from Mypetchicken, and their site actually says nothing about whether or not they are ok in the cold. The Breeds section here on BYC they are tolerant of all climates. I live in Spokane, WA. Do you think our Polish will tolerate our winters, or should I start looking for a more suitable home for them?

I have lots of polish and the only thing they dont do well with is water freezing on their crests. They are rather very hardy. You shouldnt have a problem unless it gets real cold.

That's too funny. Someone said the same thing to me last night, and I was going to ask the same question. Now that I just moved them in with the silkies, that coop happens to not have good ventilation for some reason. Well, it was fine with the big chickens, but for some odd reason, with the silkies living in there, they get frost on their crests in the winter, but that never happened with my LF chickens. never saw frost on them. I hope the polish do ok in there. I"ll make sure I put a lot of straw in there for the winter.


BTW, they're doing GREAT with the silkies! When I tried putting them in their in the day with them, the silkies were trying to peck them a little, but then I waited and put them in at night time lock up, and they were fine the next morning. everyone is getting along and they act like they've always been living together

My polish do great here in WI. I use water nipples and check crests every evening. Silkies on the other hand, did not do well here. We had to dry their feathered feet with a hair dryer every night or they got frostbite on their toes.

Hi, I am new on BYC and have been looking for polish thread and now I have found it. I'm in UK and have 17 polish at the moment various colours and some frizzle. All have been home incubated and reared in my garden. Have to say these are my first polish chickens and I have found them to be absolutely fab birds can't say bad word about them.

I'm So happy that my Spike and Vanessa are happy! They are just so content now that they're in with the silkies, they just lay there and preen each other and snuggle close, it is really sweet! awww!!!!

In our backyard experience we are finding that almost all crested, bearded, muffed, tufted, feather-footed chicken breeds are mellow temperaments - Polish, Silkie, Breda, Brahma, Faverolles, Houdan, Crevies, Sultan, Ameraucana, Araucana, Easter Egger, Barthuhner, etc. It brings out the sweetness gene in them!

That is so true! Though, our friendliest, is a comet we rescued.
