Poll: Do you think its wrong to kill your chickens?

Not culling for deformities or illness, would you kill one for meat? Even if you had grocery store acess

No, its not wrong to kill our chickens. I have some that are pets, and unless they were hurt or sick beyond healing, I'd kill them to end their suffering. The roos go to freezer camp. Nope; not wrong.

chickensducks&agoose :

i just raised and (had a guy come) butchered 19 meaties. i have a grocery store 8 miles away.. i chose to raise my birds to eat them.

Im doing that next year! Im processing though. I cant wait because I love chicken, and when the muscoy drakes are big enough Duck Ala Orange will be served.

I agree with the other posters. If it is to ill to be saved & I don't want to make other birds sick, it needs to be done. I eat eggs, but I don't eat chicken. I'm a beef person. That is probably why I'm 6 ft something & weigh over 300 lbs.

Nope...I don't think its wrong. I think it honors the animal to be repurposed for another creature. I'd rather consume my good chickens than allow them to be dumped in the county landfill wrapped in a trash bag at the end of suffering an illness or until old age and all its pains finally kills them.

By consuming them I reaffirm their worth to me~they become a living part of me and continue on, but by letting predators, illness, or old age be their end, I have proven how little their existence really meant to me personally. I believe the Native Americans had the right idea.

No.

The only difference in the chickens that are in freezer camp and the chicken I can buy at the store is that what is in freezer camp I KNOW how it was raised and treated and what has gone into it to feed it and keep it alive until I process it. I have chickens that went to freezer camp and chickens that are laying eggs. At some point the eggs layers will go to freezer camp also.

I understand where those people are coming from who can't kill their pet chickens and eat them. Most of those people, and I am making a judgement maybe, have just a few chickens and have gotten attached to them. I love my chickens but I know why they are here.

*** the pigs that we are raising too!

I like knowing where they came from.

Haven't had to as yet, with the AC limits and all, but considering someday I hope to raise my own meaties I hope I don't have a problem doing the deed and eating well.

Also, if the bird is in pain, won't recover, I wouldn't hesitate to put it out of its misery.
