I have 8 lovely girls and one boy who was supposed to be a girl. I tell him that every morning when he gives me the stink eye.

I started with 4 and add a few each year. I am set up for 20. I don't think I'll go beyond that. I figure I'll always have enough layers to give plenty of eggs for the fam even after my older girls retire.

Haha I persuaded my parents to let me get hens...we ended up picking up some bats, their transformation has been incredible! But yes they seem to be enjoying their retirement.
I had 2 rescue hens - not from batteries, though that's in my future I'm sure. I got them from an abandoned/neglected/ mistreated FFA project. One passed in December die to salpingitis that she'd been fighting even before I brought her home. The other is still kicking! She's a hoot! Took her a while to get the idea that grass is edible and safe to walk on.

Thanks for saving them!!!

10 atm. 4 pullets, 6 cockerels. I’ll at some point be having some chicken soup, if I can bring myself to do it, but growing some out to see who I want to keep around. Numbers fluctuate as I hatch throughout the season of course. Lol.

5 pullets right now.

I'm planning to end up with about 20, including one or two roosters, by next winter.

I intend to buy twice as many chicks so that I can pick the ones I like best and sell the extras as started and POL pullets.
I have always loved the idea of selling POL pullets. How much do you get for them? What breeds?
