If you get 5-7 a year how do you only have 11? Do you butcher at 2 years? This is totally normal, I am just curious.I probably get 5-7 chickens a year (I have 11 now).

Yes! This is me exactly! Even with 6 I still get overrun with eggs in the summer and give them to the local shelter. I love my egg variety - yours are beautiful!I just have a small 5 chick flock. It's nice because you can remember every name and personality but they still entertain each other. Also, you get a variety in egg colors! View attachment 2494320
I have said the same thing to myself - only broodies, too much dust in the house - but my broody chicks alway end up a little less friendly than those I raise myself. So, I forget about my pact after a while and raise inside again...Three pullets and one cockerel. I'd like to add 2-4 more pullets this spring. If one of the girls goes broody, that is. Don't really want to brood in the house again. So. Much. Dust.
I'd love to hatch a couple eggs; probably not more. One in four chance 2 eggs = 2 boys; same for 2 girls. Fifty-fifty on a split. Probably just buy pullets to be safe(r).
Thank you! The extra eggs idea is great! I have like 25 eggs right now!Yes! This is me exactly! Even with 6 I still get overrun with eggs in the summer and give them to the local shelter. I love my egg variety - yours are beautiful!
Yes, it works out beautifully. Our shelter/soup kitchen loves to take fresh eggs and vegetables, so in the summer they get SO many eggs, kale, and tomatoes and zucchini from us their heads begin to spin.Thank you! The extra eggs idea is great! I have like 25 eggs right now!
Don't worry about not having a roo - very often the are more trouble than they're worthI had 3, down to 2 due to a sexing error, but planning to add 2 more in the spring. I would love a rooster, but that can't happen in the 'burbs.
Haha I persuaded my parents to let me get hens...we ended up picking up some bats, their transformation has been incredible! But yes they seem to be enjoying their retirement. You're a kind hearted man! Those poor girls need understanding people and lovely lives.
