I just have a small 5 chick flock. It's nice because you can remember every name and personality but they still entertain each other. Also, you get a variety in egg colors! View attachment 2494320
Yes! This is me exactly! Even with 6 I still get overrun with eggs in the summer and give them to the local shelter. I love my egg variety - yours are beautiful!

Three pullets and one cockerel. I'd like to add 2-4 more pullets this spring. If one of the girls goes broody, that is. Don't really want to brood in the house again. So. Much. Dust.

I'd love to hatch a couple eggs; probably not more. One in four chance 2 eggs = 2 boys; same for 2 girls. Fifty-fifty on a split. Probably just buy pullets to be safe(r).
I have said the same thing to myself - only broodies, too much dust in the house - but my broody chicks alway end up a little less friendly than those I raise myself. So, I forget about my pact after a while and raise inside again...

Thank you! The extra eggs idea is great! I have like 25 eggs right now!
Yes, it works out beautifully. Our shelter/soup kitchen loves to take fresh eggs and vegetables, so in the summer they get SO many eggs, kale, and tomatoes and zucchini from us their heads begin to spin.

I can't imagine how rare it must be for those suffering from homelessness to get fresh vegetables and eggs.

We have 3 hens and 1 mister.

16 hens, 1 rooster. I’d like to get my hens up to a nice solid 20 this year. I also plan to hatch for eating and selling. I’m adding a much larger run/yard area and another coop for those that won’t be hanging around for long. This coop will have all the things I didn’t think of the first time! 😂 It will be a fully functioning coop in case it has to house extra hens that I may or may not decide to keep. Chicken math will sneak up on you very quickly.
