Pretty pictures, MrsMagoo!!!
Look at all those leaves! Winter is in the air
Hahaha, look at them go!!
Is your pond deep? It looks shallow from this picture. I was debating on making our pond deeper because our geese wont get in it!! Plus we have a lot of over flow from the rain during the summer. I also think that the thick bushes that surround our pond might intimidate them, so I might get rid of some of those too...
Thanks Bhonkers. We end up with leaves from August through early summer due to the mix of regular oaks, live oaks, and gum trees. We have a backpack style blower and every two weeks leaf blow 4 acres out of our 7.
The pond pictured above isn't as deep as our original one: I think it is about 5 deep feet in the middle. We had to be careful of the tree roots and telephone service cable when we dug it (my husband actually dug up the phone wire originally-the company had to come splice it). We have been building a berm around it a little at a time in order to make it a foot or so deeper all the way around. The ducks dive in it, but the geese just swim and bathe.
In our first pond, the larger one, the geese are able to dive as well as the ducks. That pond started out being around 8-10 feet deep in the center, but due to the ducks continual digging around the edges and enlargement activities (silly ducks), and leaves, etc we are sure we are going to have to dredge it out. We plan on hiring a local guy to bring his backhoe and deepen and enlarge it this summer.
We use both the ponds as part of the drainage on our property: They get flushed out really well when it rains. We get A LOT of rain at times, probably not much different than where you live. Our property had a lot of low spots when we moved here and the water just pooled in various locations: The creek in our woods would back up and flood within a foot of our house during big storms. So we cleared debris out of the creek and widened it in a few spots, then brought in several loads of dirt and spent about a year sloping our property toward a central low point that acts as a ditch. That "ditch" starts above the pond you asked about and continues through the second one and then into the creek in our woods. When it rains really hard, we have a fast moving river running the length of the property. The ducks LOVE this though: They seem to think it is a waterfowl waterslide. They get "on" the slide at the top pond and ride it all the way to the second one...over and over again.
So, how deep is your pond Bhonkers? I don't know if the shrubs bother them or not. I have some Blueberry and Goumi Berry bushes on the bank of our larger one. Both the ducks and geese love to go lay under the bushes during the day. Ours aren't horribly thick though, so I don't know if that is why your geese don't like it or not? Maybe if you trimmed them and removed every third one or something it would help. Goofy geese....try to give them something nice and they turn their picky little bills up at it: Go figure.
