She will be seven next month and the Paso I've looked at, was not worth the time and money for some leg problems. She was sold as a broodmare only to some newbies. UGH!
She will continue to take riding lessons for now. Economy is unpredictable and rather wait.
After all this time, I thought to bump this thread rather than open a new one, just to show how pony has changed and grown. Here's DD and the pony (Apache--but is invariably called "Pony") at their first distance ride, Warm-up for SHore to Shore, 25 miles. Being the only junior, she took first in the junior division, but both took the ride in stride and finished. Some pics of me in here too.
She asked me this morning--although I'm sure she's sore and tired--"When's the next ride, Mom?"
For the first half of the ride, she kept asking how much longer to the vet check but once we got to the vet check and she knew we were halfway done, she was quiet the rest of the ride. I was the miserable one since some, um, er, feminine issues, came up during the ride which made trotting quite painful. Luckily, my best friend (the one who owns the Paint in the first post) and my boyfriend and his daughter were at the ride so they were able to get me some Motrin before the final trot out.
I was actually quite proud of my boyfriend too. He wants to get into horses and made it a point of petting ever horse there at the ride. The horses were obliging enough to show him their itchy spots so he stood in the line at the pre-vet check and let horses rub on him while he scratched back, yet he was perceptive enough to know when a horse didn't want their ears messed with.
The best part of the ride was when my female friend and I went to the outhouses and on the way back, the two girls came running up "[Boyfriend] said there's something wrong with Izzie!"
So I go to check out my horse who at the time seemed fine.
Boyfriend: I think she must have kidney stones or something.
Me: Really? She urinated right after she got into the vet check and didn't seem to be in pain. What's she doing?
Boyfriend: It looks like she's trying to pee but she can't.
Me: Well, I'll drench her with some water and keep an eye on her. If she doesn't pee before we leave, I'll get one of the ride vets over and--
Boyfriend: See! She's doing it now.
Me: (after observing behavior and then laughing) She's fine. She just smells that stallion over there and is "winking" for him.
