Everything shaved except for one inch of topknot:

I shave mine bald pretty much all summer long. I think they're pretty no matter what. If you want to know what a "naked" poodle should look like, look at the breed standard for the Doberman. They're virtually identical. A well-built poodle, with no hair, should look just like a well-built Dobie.

Thank You-- I looked everywhere and could not find a pic of one shaved. I'm going to try my hand at grooming and in case I mess up wanted to see on shaved. I don't think they look bad shaved kinda cute

Don't be scared--it grows back really fast. And you have to get used to seeing their head without a topknot, but I think it's totally cute. Just keep in mind how a Dobie looks, that's what you'll get...with little curls.

What are some good clippers for poodle hair? I know some tend to overheat and others don't cut very well. I looked in my animal catalogs and there's lots of different types of clippers. They all say basically the same thing about them other than having different blades and speeds. I need advise

The A-5 compatibles blades give you a better cut with more choice on length. If you want a short poodle cut then I would get a 7F or 5F blade. If you want about 1/2" then get a 3F or 3 3/4. The bigger the blade number the shorter it cuts the hair. I use a 10 on the faces and 30 on the feet.

I've used nothing but Oster A-5s for 20 years, on dogs and horses (and I've only had to buy TWO clippers in all that time, the 2nd pair because the 1st pair was lost), but I do notice that the Osters nowadays don't seem to be the same clipper they used to be. My groomer, who has a mobile salon, uses an Andis unit with the motor housing separate from the clipper body.

I use whatever blades are A-5 compatible and can be had cheapest, usually. I do NOT like the "fancy," more expensive, ceramic-coated blades. They don't seem to hold an edge for long at all.

We use a 40 (surgical) blade for face/feet/tails, and usually a 5 or 7 on body. Legs, poms, and ears are hand-scissored (which I do very poorly, so usually wait for my groomer for those clips). If I'm doing them myself, they're most likely getting stripped from head to tail with a 7 blade, and the 40 on FFT.

Ironically, I'm not bad at growing/maintaining show coats, keeping them in oil if needed, banding the neck/topknot, and wrapping the ears.
