Poodles and Chickens - together forever!

I have something poodle-ish (has terrier looking hair, too). Mommys Little Monster is currently rocking a mohawk. As soon as I have time, he is getting a short hair cut and we are going to leave that hawk, only a little thinner. Think Bikini Clip + mohawk.

For clippers: A-5s are good for part of the work. I have the A-5 Goldens. I just picked up the Laube Speed Feed trimmer which is a full size battery powered trimmer. His paws came out GREAT. It has an adjustable blade (size 40 - 9 I think). Stays alot cooler than A-5's.

BBird has a really nice writeup on the Laube trimmers on her groomblog.

My poodlish still likes to chase the turkeys, but they like to chase him, too.

ETA: when he's naughty, we call him the Terrier.

Re: the mohawk--ten or fifteen years ago, I was in Houston for the Astro Hall show series, and competing in the agility trials. Adjacent to the agility ring was the flyball area. One team was named something to do with electricity--I can't recall now, exactly what...anyway, the smallest dog on their team was a white toy poodle, a real firecracker. The dog was shaved down really slick all over, EXCEPT for a mohawk-like strip that started on top of its head, and continued down its spine, in a "lightning-bolt" shape. It was dyed fluorescent green.

Does anyone ever have issues with their blades getting "clogged" with the poodle hair?

His hair is the only poodle hair that has ever caused the clippers to stop working. I've gotten 3 different sets of clippers and the same thing happens each time.

Any ideas?

Here is Pogo:

Cool!!!! I am going to try leaving bracelets and a thin hawk, but not all the way down the back. His hair is too curly for proper Liberty spikes down his back (plus he'd look like the lochness monster).

I thought about giving him a mullet or lambchops next time, though that is sort of the proper bichon cut, isn't it?????

Mikarod, are you blow drying the hair out straight before you clip? Also a silicone-containing conditioner or leave-in conditioner makes the hair easier to clip. Look for an ingredient with an -icone suffix, like dimethicone.

Oh no? I always just CLIP before I wash. That's an idea though!

Is it because the natural oils are causing the hairs to "stick" in the blades?

If you're cutting dirty hair, and especially if the coat is soft instead of wiry, that will wreak havoc on your blades. Wash and brush out straight under the blow-dryer. I'm telling you, our Spee-Dee stand dryer is one of the best investments we ever made. I'm in love with that thing.

You'll be amazed how your clippers will glide through clean, dry hair!

Mik, you'll be shocked at how much easier it is with clean, blown out hair. And your clipper blades will be soooo much happier with you. The cut comes out a lot more even, too.

NP, I tried my horsey Metro Vac N Blow on the poodlish. Scared him half to death (me, too!), and everything on my workstand blew away. Me thinks we need something a bit less blowy. Off to look at the Spee Dee.

This is our Labradoodle. She is the best dog we have ever had and we have had some good ones over the years. But, we didn't get her from a Pet Store. She came from a Breeder in Boise.

I love her Poodle qualities.

All of your dogs are so wonderful.

Sadie is very good around the chickens. I don't usually take her in the run though because she gets too much poo in her pads. But, the girls aren't afraid of her.

My groomer uses a vacuum attachment in her mobile salon, to keep things neat, and it is kinda loud!

The stand dryer was a huge chunk of change, but at the time we were growing several show coats, including one specials coat, and that dryer reduced the time spent on even the specials coat so much that I could totally bathe, oil, blow out, band and wrap in around an hour.

We have this one . It has a lifetime warranty.

ETA: I spelled the brand name wrong: it's just "Speedy"
