We only have 5 acres, mostly wooded. I've never had Cornish X, but from all I've read here, heritage turkeys would be about the opposite! I have no doubts that we could take our birds and turn them loose in the woods, and they'd thrive. They eat a LOT less than chickens, pound for pound. We have clipped one wing on each bird to keep them from roosting in trees or flying onto our neighbor's property.
The biggest thing I DON'T like about them is that they don't seem smart enough to go into their yard/coop to roost at night after ranging all day. We have to "put them to bed" every single day. Some of them will go in and roost, but others will roam aimlessly around outside for hours if we don't get them put up first. It takes two of us to put them up--one to lure them in with treats, and the other to "herd" the strays in the right direction.
