Trish, did you ever try the granular PDZ?
This is a nice thread.
We are altering the duck house to also house the chickens. Hubby says he does NOT want the chickens pooping on the ducks....this board thing will be GREAT!
I just started using the granular sweet pdz a couple days ago, I just love it.
My coop was starting to tell my nose I needed to do something, so I added it and stirred it in.
a little while later It was perfect again. This stuff is awesome!![]()

I just read on the "PDZ" website that the granualar form is great for chickens and is safe for the chicks to eat as it will help them digest their food, same as "grit"??!! Love all of these wonderful ideas on this website, and am very grateful for your ideas as I read this posting before starting on our chicken house. We have just about finished building our coop and run, just a few more items to complete. Our babies will be here Monday or Tuesday, 3/26 or 3/27, and I can't wait to get them in their new home. And I know your ideas are going to make my life so much easier. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
My new coop is only 4 x 5.5 and made without poop boards. Just a couple days before I was to move the girls into the coop I read this thread. I figured since my coop is small (and off the ground) I'd try covering the whole inside with the PDZ. Our local Agway had 40 lb granular so that's what I got. It's absolutely wonderful.
I go out every morning and scoop the whole thing......keep a 5 gallon bucket right underneath where the door is located. Since they roost pretty much in a line, the poop is pretty much just in those places. There hasn't even been any poo tracked into the egg boxes. And best of all...NO smell. The run is getting that chicken smell now that temperatures are rising but the coop is great.
I've not noticed my girls eating it at all but then the only time they are in there is to roost at night and to walk through to the egg boxes.
Thanks so much for posting the info.
Thank you oodles!!! We're first time chicken owners (so new we don't even have them yet) and we're building our soon-to-be residents a chicken tractor. The coop part will have a 3x4 foot floor and it sounds like PDZ will be perfect! Maybe add some warmer material to it when it turns chilly in the fall. Will be sure to report back after the inhabitants get to... uh... inhabitate.![]()
