Poop board convert *warning-graphic/gross poop pictures*

Pics
We almost didn't put the wide side up. Our old chicken house (built by someone else) has 2 inch wide roosts... and it took some convincing to get my husband to agree to put the wide side up.. but he is the one who decided to use a pole for the other roost ... incase the chickens had a preference LOL.

jchny2000: We didn't paint anything yet. I had thought about painting the inside of the walls, but we decided not to... then we thought about painting the floor, again decided not to (I think we are eventually going to lay down some linoleum). The only other thing I may do to the poop boards is seal up any larger gaps if needed (caulk). DH is not convinced it will be needed, so we will see :)

Missa Chickabee: LOVED the brooder under the poop boards idea! Were you the first to post it? I have the pic saved but not a name :) After raising 2 sets of chickens in the house for 4 weeks each... yeah, it was something that was a definite in the new coop design LOL. This way we can have new chickies in the house for a week or two (if we want) and then the dusty... smellly little boogers can go out to the coop! and by the time they are big enough to be put in with the flock, there should be less upset because they were right there :) When we don't have baby chicks in it I am going to use it for a broody pen for hens to set eggs or a broody break pen.
Credit goes to BigFamily4me post 146 on page 15 of this thread. I still can't upload pics, copy them or whatever!!

Brooder box under the coop is an awesome idea. For now I have 2 of my nest boxes under there because it's the darkest spot and I' trying to entice my soon-to-be-laying girls to the next and not to the hiding places in our big run.

PS. White Experior paint doesn't absorb the poop like wood does. And it gives them a brighter space in winter. Again just IMO. Your coop is great!

I converted my hen's roost poop area this weekend!
Wanted to share the photo

made from an old basement countertop.
I had the black bin on the side of the shed just waiting to be used.
DH collects metal = brackets were in the garage in the tool wall.
Cost = $0.00 / all repurposed items.

Well, finally a bit of success getting a pic up. They all look a bit evil-eyed because of the flash. This is the new poop board with the PDZ. It's a breeze to clean in the morning with the kitty litter scoop. Room underneath now for some functional space for them. This has been in for a few days and I still have to help a couple of them get settled up there at bedtime. This shot was their first night experiencing the roost. Really, they have nice eyes. :) Very grateful to my caving-into-my-ideas-eventually DH.

Fantastic roost for all of your birds!

Thanks, II. I just went out to my coop to get something and a hawk flew into the run and out again. A whole lot of squawking and 18 of the 19 got themselves into the coop. The hawk did not get the other one. She somehow got out of the run and I had to catch her. That's job. Not as agile as I used to be. I comforted her for about 10 minutes and then put here with the rest. We are going to have to secure our run better but we are out of money.

Hey Cheryl,

That roost looks great! Glad your girls all survived the hawk incident. I'm still trying to teach my girls to stay on the roost at night. They seem to like sitting on the pop door, silly birds! Can't wait to get my PDZ and DE on Wednesday! I just saw them in their dust bath bowl. I couldn't see them out the window and being a worrying chicken mother, I went outside to check on them. There was dust flying everywhere, LOL, then three dust puffs jumped out of the bowl and ruffled feathers which then made then recognizable. LOL

I can just picture it! Chickens are just a blast and it sounds like your three have personality plus. I'm outside in the big uncovered run building a smaller covered run with whatever we I can find around the yard. Won't DH be surprised when he gets home. He'll be so embarrassed by what it looks like he's build a nice one.

But I say this to the Hawk:

Eat your heart out. You are not getting my babies for lunch.

Nice roost/poop board/coop. I am in the process of building and was wondering how big your coop is and how many chicken you have in it. I am trying to figure out how to maximize the amount of roost space I have so that I will have room for when "chicken math" takes over big time! :)

Right...chicken math. That's what we were thinking about, too. The bird's space is 10 ft X 12 ft. With the roost they are not crowded at all. (they are in lock-down today because a hawk came by yesterday) We have a same-sized attached room for storage and wash-up. We spent FAR too much money and will never get it back in eggs, but I really love the coop and wash-up room. When one bird needs a "time-out" I just take her into my side for a bit. Lots of room for extra feed, PDZ, shavings. other equ't and a chair for me.

It is not fancy, just a square little house with windows. (would have put them up higher if we had known better) Would have made big overhangs..also if we had known better. A partially-roofed run against the run is on my wish list. Making do for now.

How many birds so you think you will eventually have? we have 19 right now and will end up with about 30 for eggs, at least that's the plan....but not right away. 19 eat enough feed.
