poop stuck on my chickens bottom (large area) ! help what do I do?

This was all I needed, and all the peep-peeping stopped when it came off. She's back in the brooder...peeping resumes.

I have several with dried poo stuck in their butt feathers. Can they still lay eggs? Can they die from having poo stuck in their butt feathers?
I can't just yank or pull the feathers out! It will be a big job to soak them as I have several like this. I have had 2 die in the last couple of weeks. Could it be from this, or is it some disease? They are free range. I don't have enough roosts. Some sleep on top of plastic cages or shelves. Could this be part of the problem? I clean the shelves and cage tops off every night. I haven't had this problem until just lately. They have slept on the cages and shelves for years. I do have room for about 10 that can sleep on roosts. Is it real important that they be able to roost??

Could this cause the hens to not be able to lay their eggs? Could they become egg bound?
I couldn't see anything wrong with my ones that died.

Wash bottom and then give Epsom salt mixture. There are two ways to dose the hen. One is by dissolving 1 teaspoon in an ounce of water and, using a syringe, carefully squirting it down her throat. The other is much easier. Fill a small washtub with warm water and stir in a heaping 1/4 cup of epsom salts. Put the chicken in the bath. Let her sit there for 15 minutes. She’ll like it! (I have a YouTube video of how to bathe a chicken here.) If it’s a chilly day, blow dry before putting her back out. If the epsom salt treatment is going to work, it will after two days, a treatment each day (oral and/or bath both times.)

One of my girls had clumps of poo stuck on her feathers, and starting to weigh her butt down, poor girl. Hubby and I trimmed the poop off yesterday and it looks so much better. Will keep an eye on it. I think she might be roosting where the ladder meets the roost, so the poop builds up over night on her bum.

Thanks for sharing this...I had this exact thing happen to one of my BlackStars and was shocked at how big and hard the pooball was. I thought it was a smudge, but it was bigger than a golf ball and hard as a rock. Couldn't have been comfortable for her. I feel bad that I didn't check it sooner. My husband held her and I trimmed it away. I don't think I could have soaked it loose. She went running off in the yard afterwards and looked happy to be rid of it.

i know, their poop seems to harden into cement when it dries! Glad to hear she's free from that extra weight. We ended up trimming a piece of wood on the roost and it hasn't happened again for ours.

I had the same issue with one my Rhode Island Whites.

just wipe it! unless it is dry you can wipe it off
