Poor Smoky!!

I know they heal well, if infection doesn't overwhelm their systems, but that was awful-looking. At first, it looked like a big hole in her side, then I realized that the skin was pulled down like venetian blinds. Wish I had picked them up more often and looked closer. I know I did examine Skye when she was so bare from her molt because the skin was exposed, but these are very fluffy girls and a wound like that is easily hidden. I'll be more vigilant from now on. Smoky, Dusty and Skye are not the type to ask to be picked up like some of my other girls, but Smoky sat very still for us and kept looking up at me as I was talking to her. Call me crazy, but she did seem to understand our intent to help her and even relaxed and closed her eyes. I'd really hate to lose her.

I am always surprised and amazed by our girls when washing, treating, and handling them. Some of our girls do not care to be handled but they always calm down and seem to understand you are helping them. Don't worry Speckledhen, Smoky will be back to normal in no time.

Thanks for the encouragement. My youngest BR rooster, Mace, along with his two half-sisters, just went to their new home with lockedhearts today so I had his empty dog crate to put Smoky in, complete with water and feed already in there. She's being quiet and seems to be resting comfortably. The crate is in the same coop with Suede so she's not in unfamiliar territory. The crate is on top of Zane's newly built cage, which is on top of the broody pen with Nugget and her five chicks. She's not alone at all.

I've been thinking about putting rubber tips on my bigger rooters spurs.

I think I'll use rubber vacuum caps from the auto parts store.
Maybe a little elmers glue to hold the on.
