Ok I leave my doors open 24x7. I do not have raccoon where I live and noticed OP is in AR. I do like the carabiner lock you run a tighter ship than I do. I have only had a few 2 week old chick losses(possum) which we corrected by shutting the door until they were larger, oh yeah and chick losses from migrating hawks/harriers. My hens like their fly in and fly out setup and free ranging with dedicated feed stations. We have coyote packs and neighbor dogs, but own a good sized pack that mark our area up so they don't come close. A few have forgone the coop completely and choose the trees but we have dusk to dawn lighting available for them so they have the option of sightedness at night should they choose to roost near a light source. We have experienced our only major day time losses over 3 years now from the neighbors dog that digs under my fence and who I will be trapping the next time this happens.
