Popular Music , Dumbing Down Our Kids?

I agree with you. The N word used to be bad but rappers use it over 20 times in one song. And caucasions cant' say the N word but its fine for them to call us "crackers" which is a racist term. I dont get it?

the overuse of "tolerance" will be the downfall to our society, just wait and see. personally, i am tired of tolerating everything because it might hurt someones feelings or they might feel picked on etc etc. ill be glad when it comes full circle and people decide to not sit back and "tolerate" everything so passively. real ignorance is just standing by while the whole of society becomes morally bankrupt. yes, i can keep my kids from listening to it, but what about parents who think its ok to allow their kids to listen to whatever, just as long as they give a detailed explanation about it afterwards? do kids really have to have this level of knowledge? its almost as bad as the parents who hand out birth control, alcohol or even drugs on the basis that "they are going to do it anyways, at least if they do it at home, ill know what they are doing" or something along those lines.

Better to hand out birth control or get some morning after pills than have to worry about your daughter getting pregnant. For everybody that says your a bad parent if your child doesn't abstain I ask this. What was your status when you got married. Drugs and alcohol being handed out is wrong.

Tolerance is a necessary part of society. One of the things I wont tolerate is people shoving their values down my throat or telling me how I should live.

If you are raising your children properly, the lyrics in some song should not change their values or make them stupid. I agree with a previous poster that computers are making children stupid and lazy more than music or tv.

Black artist's originated rap and yes it is ok for them to use the N word when talking to each other. I don't worry about what seems like reverse discrimination from black people. I'm white and I don't think any of my ancestors had to sit in the back of the bus. Racism is still very strong in the USA. I don't know what it's like in other countries because I have never really been a part of any other countries social fabric. At any rate I digress. I think rap music was originally created to let black people express some of their anger. Of course it has grown from there. I'm not quite sure why so many white kids emulate all the gangsta stuff. Probably do it to stress out their parents. I know cops like the pants down around the knees thing though. Makes it a lot easier to catch the real gangstas.

Ahh.... you are wise beyond your years.... you just need to toss in some of The Who, Lead Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Charlie Daniels Band, Heart, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, and The Doors, and you're gonna grow up just fine

Seriously, it's nice to see young people rejecting that no-talent, hate music.

You both have great taste in music.

i was married when i was 17, my husband was 18. we went on to have 6 children.
and really..who says birth control will keep your daughter from getting pregnant? and besides that, what is wrong with raising your kids with morals and values? i have several teenagers and none of them drink or sleep around. i know where they are at all times, and if they wanted to date, they would do so with a chaprone. and honestly, if my daughter were to make a horrible mistake and get pregnant, i would rather her take the responsibility and raise her child than kill it with the morning after pill. up until 20-30 years ago people cared about instilling values in their family but now its almost as if they want to be their kids best friends. so sad and we are reaping what our parents have sown, and what others are continuing to sow by allowing this behavior.

No matter what country you go to there will always be racism. I too am white but I dis rap music. Eminem being 1 of the people I dislike. DGF likes it but I will stick with rock, metal and hairbands.

I agree. I like the same stuff you do. Can't really stand rap. I was in the Army when it first started getting popular and It drove me nuts, but all the younger black guys liked it. The older black guys mostly liked MoTown and blues. Of course they lived off post, so us white dudes got to listen to a lot of rap.

i agree with you. its not the music in and of itself, its the fact that parents are allowing their kids to listen to it and actually buying it for them.

My 11-year old boy, when I asked what kind of music his friends listen to, told me girls talk about music, boys don't. On his MP3 player he has: Johnny Cash, The Doors, the soundtrack from O Brother Where Art Thou, Fanfare for the Common Man, the Beetles, They Might Be Giants, Hank the Cowdog (book), music by John Williams, Violent Femmes, the Police.....

He has some varied tastes, but is still obviously influenced by this geezer parents. Strangly enough, both by kids love Fanfare for the Common Man. I used to play it in the car, over and over again, if they were fighting. They would always shut up and pull out the air trumpets.
