Popular Music , Dumbing Down Our Kids?

We don't even turn on the radio at our house. Actually, my girls are growing up listening to a lot of oldies, Disney animation soundtracks (because I admit I still love them), some good tunes from the 80s and 90s, and a lot of sountracks. At age 4, my youngest DD can identify major theme songs such as Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Superman, E.T., Harry Potter, and even less obscure themes like The Last Mimzy, August Rush etc.

I think everyone has strong feeling about the music that we don't personally enjoy.
I know that I often find myself thinking pretty harsh things about people when I hear their ringtones go off and it some stupid (to me) rap song, or when they pull up along side my car and my ears are about to explode. And all I can think is if my ears have to die, couldn't the last thing they hear be something less revolting?

But I know that there are a lot of people out there that feel the same way about the music I listen to... some of my favorites, for example, are Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Korn, Alice in Chains, Cold, Tool, etc.
I am pretty literally addicted to Marilyn Manson, but there are a ton of people who would rank Manson lower than the artists that this thread was started about.

And I, personally, can't stand country music. I would rather listen to a fork scraping across a plate.

My point is, of course, that there are a lot of people out there that despise and think badly about just about every genre of music. There are concern for our children/how stupid is this conversations going on over the music you listen to as well... with the exception of maybe classical/instrumental.

People don't have to like other peoples' music choices, because nobody likes everything, but we don't need to insult peoples' intelligence or characters based on the music they prefer.

JMO.

I couldn't agree with you more here - there are so many parents that don't have a clue as to what their kids are up to and in to. And in the end, the child often suffers and thus society at large suffers. BUT... I don't think being out to make money should absolve you of any responsibility. The media has the ability to shape minds and attitude - that is REAL power and anyone wielding it should at the very least question their impact on society at large.

Yes on both counts. By virtue of the "most being bad," as you put it, the least gets a bum rap, so to speak. This in turn leads to discrimination. That's reality.

Along these lines, lets ask this: If you are a nice person and yet you associate with thugs, hoodlums and ne'er do wells, how are you to be viewed?
And, how long before you, yourself, absorb enough from the company you keep to be affected?
Again it's the content that matters, not the presentation or the celebrity of the presenter.

What must be seen is that it does not neccesarily follow that because you have a first amendment right, "anything goes."
Or, as Hubert Humphrey so clearly stated it, "The right to be heard does not automatically include the right to be taken seriously."

Oh I dunno Davaroo - I know people from all different walks of life in my life now - some have different addictions than others, some are nice, some are not, some listen to rap (I personally happen to like some rap and I like Eminem (some, not all) of his songs). In school I hung out with EVERY type of person, I had no "clique" I belonged to. Was I judged? I dont know - probably - did I care? No because I knew who I was inside and out. If my friend drank or smoked (whatever it was, didnt matter, cigs or not) did not mean I did. If they failed school, didnt mean I did - I was an honor student thru and thru all of my years.

I think the old addage of dont judge a book by its cover applies in every instance. I have friends that are bikers - hard core... and look the part and people JUDGE HARSHLY, grab their children and pull them in whenever these friends roll in. And ya know something? You would not meet a nicer bunch of guys in your lifetime. If I told you they didnt drink, smoke, do drugs and went to church every Sunday... you'd fall out of your chair I'm certain, once you saw them. I'd entrust my childrens lives (and have) with them before I entrusted some of the people I sit next to at Church on Sunday morning with them, of that I can assure you.

They are big teddy bears with tattoos that ride bikes... outside means everything in this society today and its shameful because its whats inside that counts. If people would just take the time to get to know someone, we wouldnt be the society of "phobes" we are.

Not everything is as it seems to the naked eye much of the time. I admit, we all judge, yes... its hard not to - but next time, try not to judge someone sitting there listening to that "rap music" - because it might be ME next to you in that vehicle jamming to Eminems "Lose Yourself" and thinking of something thats going on in my life that applies to that song

.

Or.. I might just be going crazy and acting stupid while I Shake a Tail Feather with my kid in the backseat as we do our "stupid dance" like chickens.

Or.. I could be rocking out to LIVE or another Christian Rock band.....and what may sound like screamin' jeebies to you..is actually someone screaming "in the name of Jesus"

I'd much rather watch CMT cause I am a country girl too! Jason Aldean rocks!

I do occationally listen to Theory of a deadman, nickelback, U2, Mariah Carrey and Three Days Grace but other than that its mainly country. My sis that stays with me is 16 so I don't mind her watching MTV because she only watches it for her favorite show called " The Duel". My sis is an honor roll student so I am not really worried about MTV effecting her!!! The child flips out if she gets a C on her report card and I am extremely happy with her working so hard!!!

Winston Churchill said, "If your not a liberal at 20 (substitute whatever you like for the word liberal) then you're heartless. If you're not a conservative (again fill in as appropriate) then you have no head."

The point is that people change and we are often in two minds as we go through life. Of course, any one with any sense will know that nothing is absolute. There exists rap with a good message, for example. And just because I hear a thumping beat coming from your car, does not mean you are a criminal - well, unless you count noise ordinance violations.

But it is not just rap, of it's own. There is a disturbing genre of hate music spread by neo-supremacists that is downright ugly. Ditto, the death metal and rage genre's. Because we don't see these things as relevent, does not mean that they have no relevance.
They are signposts, indicators pointing to the ways we are changing.

Im not wholly against change mind you. But I'm not blindly in favor of it just because you can, either. I dont advocate the "anything goes and lets see what happens" approach.
When a change is proven to be beneficial, then it is a good one. When change involves "poppin' caps in ho's," "bangin' and pimpin' in da' hood" and bringing down society in flames - then I remain unconvinced of it's value. Sorry.

Again, it's not how it's dressed up or how it sounds, but what is at the core of it's content. I mean, you can polish a turd till it glistens in the sun, but what are you still left with?
