Popular Music , Dumbing Down Our Kids?

That is a very interesting point of view that I'd have to agree with. Marshall has a new cd out. The video is pretty funny but listening to his lyrics is very interesting. The man is a very smart and creative person.

I agree, he is a genius on the mic...a total original.
As for the age gap, to clear any confusion, since I am listed as Masonic, it does not mean I am old. I am only 31.

Since the world began parents have been complaining because this new generation of music is ruining their children. Beethoven was terrifying, Elvis was the devil, and now we have Stevie Nicks (remember Stevie?) saying no, it's not music it's computers that are ruining American kids.
(sigh) It's like anything else, you lay the foundation and then trust them to know what is and isn't acceptable. If you've done a good job there isn't any music, TV, computer or peer pressure that can undo that.

It's funny how perspectives change, isn't it? When I was in high school I thought people in their 30's were terribly old . . . I'm not sure why, because I have never, ever thought of my mother or grandmother as old. But yeah, I lumped anyone else 30 or over in the "old" category back then.

I'm a teenager, and I strongly dislike rap

I listen to all kinds of rock, and some country. Something that's actually REAL music. Where people have REAL talent, without the fancy equipment to make them sound like they do. But hey, that's just my opinion.

If it says anything, my all time favorite band is The Beatles. I'd much rather listen to them, The Beach Boys, Donovan, Journey, or the Eagles than attempt to listen to rap.

I'm not a big fan of rap, but dimissing a whole genre's artist as untalented is painting with a broad brush. I do like some of the layers of rhythm some rap has. I don't particularly care for country, myself; unless it is Texas country.

I agree, my 8 year old has a best friend who is of mixed race and he LOVES the rap and all that kind of music, and I HATE rap more than anything, and I try to talk to Chandler and tell him that this is NOT a good type of music as its so disrespectful to women, and cops and other people . . .and while what he hears isn't what some of it is, as far as being the really violent dirty talking ones (how anyone thinks that makes a person feel good is beyond me, I hear it and understand why they get angry and want to shoot someone. I want to shoot the radio!!

) I still think he is way too young to hear some of it. The ones that McD's are giving out right now are really good for young kids and we listen to them quite abit when we are in the car, but I also have this firm belief that I am related to Woody Guthrie (My maiden name) and we listen to his CD alot also, and love it. . . so I think I am going to be o.k. with Chandler and the music, but its SO hard when their friends parents don't see anything wrong with it!!

Yep, I've had that thought as well - the world really needs an inexpensive small portable directional EMF generator. That would go a long ways towards regaining some civility in the world from all the insensitive jerks who insist upon "sharing" their music with everyone within 500 ft of them.

Ahh.... you are wise beyond your years.... you just need to toss in some of The Who, Lead Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Charlie Daniels Band, Heart, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, and The Doors, and you're gonna grow up just fine

Seriously, it's nice to see young people rejecting that no-talent, hate music.

I came in from working in the yard one day to hear some music blaring from the back of the house:

I'm gonna f**k the b**ch, Gonna kick her in the head.
Gonna pop a cap in her until she is {{ chorus: dead!! }}.
Im gonna throw her and toss her right out in the gutter,
Gonna cruise downtown and get me anudder...{{ chorus: f**k it!!}}"

It was coming from my daughters room. She said her friend gave it to her. We never heard it or anything like it again at our house. Today, she loves Kenny Chesney.

It's not the the "age gap" or "artistic license" that is at issue here. It is the content of certain so called music that is of concern.
Certainly not all music is bad and, yes, some of Eminems lyrics are insightful.
But some others are downright disturbing to anyone with half a brain. Perhaps that is the real problem; ignorance.

When the lyrics of a song endorse a life of violence, crime, murder, hatred, mysogeny, drug abuse and more, you gotta ask yourself - "Why is this good stuff? Someone remind me again..."
