Popular Music , Dumbing Down Our Kids?

Someone had stated that pretty much that music influenced kids to be sexually active requiring birth control and the morning after pill. So I pretty much let them know it has been an on going thing for centuries and that music has nothing to do with it.

My daughter loves Yellow Submarine by The Beatles but she also loves elmo and techno so I can't complain to much....lol.

no, i wasnt saying that at all. i am saying that parents being permissive and allowing their kids to listen to anything they want and pretty much letting them do whatever they want is causing our society to go downhill really fast. as for birth control and the shot, i said that it was the same parents who hand their kids birth control on the grounds that "they are going to do it anyways" .
and of course kids will make mistakes, but when you have these parents who want to be friends instead of authority figures, they are obviously going to make far more mistakes because of the lack of boundaries or any sort of moral or ethical framework in their respective families.
i have seen so many parents who think its cool when their kids do adult things..why? they are children, allow them to be children and not force all these adult issues upon them.
that said, my kids are obsessed with weird al right now and if i hear "amish paradise" one more time, i might have to move out!

my faves are.. white and nerdy, amish paradise, hey lucy, the flintstones one and "don't download this song". Dont download this song is #1 on my MP4 player.

Does music need to be complicated? I like to think its a way to express oneself and relax. Unfortunatly with everyone with trying outdo each other its so messed up. Sometimes it would be nice to get back to basics.. the old time Appalachain mountain music and the like are very insperational.

Personally, I have heard some rap, but I will never purposely listen to it, it just doesn't fit with me, sure, sometimes the beat is pretty good, but theres too much junk in alot of it for me to want to turn on a rap station. I understand alot of musicians will make a song or just record one to get money and fame, and there is some good music out there from that purpose but if killing people in music is expressing yourself? Then I won't be listening to any of it, I feel bad for those people. I especially enjoy music that comes from the musician's heart, especially music that they have written themselves and slaves hours over, to me it just has so much more meaning, and that goes for all genres music, I can definitely respect that.

Fortunately for me, when I was younger my mom introduced good music to me that stuck, mainly 70's and 80's soft rock, and oldies country, some blues. Occasionally I'll heard some newer artists that I like the sound of and what they stand for.

I think my all time favorite band is Fleetwood Mac, some other musicians I really like:
Stevie Nicks, Eurythmics, Blondie, Heart, Regina Spektor, Bat for Lashes, Feist, Tegan and Sara, KT Tunstall, Elton John, Apocalyptica, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Meatloaf, Cyndi Lauper, Kate Bush, Hall & Oates, Allison Krause, Robert Plant, John Couger Mellencamp...

I do my school online at home and I signed up for a History of Rock & Roll class, very interesting, basically goes through music over the years, how it came to be etc. really, music is all intertwined, it evolved from one to another, so I guess it gets me when people say they absolutly hate one genre but like another that had evolved from it.. it's fine if you dislike certain music, but some people get over the top with hate.
Anyway, in the class there was a 'which 5 songs would you take with you if you were stuck on a deserted island', and then the teacher took all the songs and put it on a playlist for everyone..

There was maybe like five rock classics, a couple country, the ones I chose (Dreams - Fleetwood Mac, Comin Back To Me - Jefferson Airplane, These Dreams - Heart, Time After Time - Cyndi Lauper, and Dark Cone Soon - Tegan and Sara), but all the rest of the songs on the playlist were like heavy death metal and nasty rap songs, makes me wonder...

Ahh.... you are wise beyond your years.... you just need to toss in some of The Who, Lead Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Charlie Daniels Band, Heart, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, and The Doors, and you're gonna grow up just fine

Seriously, it's nice to see young people rejecting that no-talent, hate music.

Most of those are on my ipod as well

All of my guy friends like basically the same music as me. It's all the girls I hang out with that like rap and hip-hop so much. Maybe that's why I get along with the guys more easily

haha

Really any kind of music has the ability to be good, you just need some decent lyrics to start with. Someone else mentioned Linkin Park, which is considered rap metal. They sound great, and all their songs don't cuss every two words and revolve around sex, like most rap and modern, popular music does
