Popular Music , Dumbing Down Our Kids?

As a person who shudders at the lyrics of some rap songs I still have to remind myself that the Ladies Home Journal and none other than the New York Times said that the "blues" music of the 1920's was the "devil's music" and was sure to be the ruination of mankind.

So was Elvis

so were the Beatles.......

I DO think this generation has got some very negative ideas in their heads, but there are just as many of them that are level headed normal kids trying to figure out how to live in a world that is in pretty bad shape and changing rapidly. Brace yourself. I can't wait to see what comes next!

I don't understand why people like rap, pop, and hip hop so much. I'm 16 and all I listen to is Train, Poison, Alice Cooper, Barenaked Ladies...well, you get the idea. I also really like the older country (even bluegrass)

OMG, fogie, codger, geezer, old fart alert.

People have been saying that the younger generation is more decadent, has looser morals, is less educated, stupider, etc since at least Socrates. The music, clothes, langauge and slang that younger generation has is almost always considered "loose" by the older generation. At one time the waltz was not allowed to be danced in public because it was too licentious. Flappers clothes and hair were too short and girls smoked, and the language, my gosh it was the cat's pajamas................

My son is in 1st grade, just learning to read. He's very excited about it and reads everything he can get his hands on. He has a KidzBop CD from a Happy Meal his grandmother bought him the other day. Driving home from Chickenstock CT today he asked me, "Mom, what does w-i-t-u spell?" I'm thinking he needs glasses because that doesn't spell anything. Finally I figured it out-"witu" as in "with you". That caused me to groan.

Can I just curl up and die now?

It makes me sick when I here the middle schoolers and even elementary school kids singing that crap.
Of course, I bring up country music and they all have a fit about how "boring" it is.
Rap music is all about how much money you have, how many women you can degrade, how many times your brothers and sisters get shot, and how often you get high. There are only a handful of rap songs out there that dont include one or more of these.

There are so many great bands out there that have lyrics that actually mean something and are not trash, Thank Great chocolate muffins!

Personally I am disgusted with most pop and rap music, but I just remind myself this as with all other trends will eventually pass.

BTW. I'm going to see Nightwish for my third time Friday the 8th

My son is 17 and not allowed to own music unless it's recorded by a band that is , at least nominally, Christian. I've read the lyrics to many of the songs as well as the secular songs the older kids have and they all seem to be disjointed. It's just lines of disconnected words. My older son says it makes sense if you watch the band interviews because that's when the "artists" explain them. Give me a break.
