What would possess and this isn't the only one it's just the first time I've noticed it down here in Florida, the dominant rooster to think that 3 a.m. in the morning is a good time to Crow. When I lived in Upstate New York I had an equally decent-sized flock of chickens but only one rule that I know of. And he crowed a little bit these were hybrids White Rock crossed with cornish game hens. Enormous Birds but again back to the crowing just didn't get that much of it. The last two dominant roosters including this one crow constantly all day long and apparently only take about an 8 hour break between bouts of crowing LOL

They will also respond to other roosters crowing, so if you have more than one cock bird or the one you have is within hearing of another (could be up to a mile away) they will crow more. During the night, they will crow when disturbed either by sound or light and once disturbed they may not settle straight back down, especially if there are two of them trying to have the last word (crow). Also, some individuals will be more inclined to crow than others.

I find that young cockerels in a flock with a senior rooster are more confident about crowing in the dark when they cannot be identified by him and their chorus curtailed. Might be time to invite the young boys to dinner before they upset the neighbours. ;)

Roosters crow. Its what they do. They do it for every imaginable reason and every reason they can imagine. Long time ago had a rooster who if I didn't know better was blind and suffered from that condition that blind people suffer from when their circadian rhythm gets messed up from not know when it's daylight/nighttime. I swear this son of a gun crowed more between sundown and sunrise than any other time. He was a vampire rooster . He also had the proverbial stake treatment real fast also. I always seem to get the unbalanced ones.
