Possible broody

She will be okay. Sometimes we have to be mean moms for the better good of our children no matter the species. Yesterday I had to take one of my dogs in for a dental procedures. Broke my heart to leave her, but she is much better now. Your hen will be back to her old self in a few days and free from the desire to sit in a hot nestbox all day. Break her before it gets too hot out, and she's too depleted.

Thank you, you are so right and it makes me feel better. Though I still feel like such a mean mom she keeps pacing and sticking her head though the cage bars at the bottom.. :/

So she won't freeze tonight?? And she'll get over it once it's dark and she can no longer see them?

I would give her a roost bar, she should eventually settle on it. 40 degrees is nothing to a chicken, that's comfortable sleeping weather.

Okay, I'll give her one and hope she settles. And that's good to know I guess I just worried with her being a little thin from sitting so long but she does have a feather coat and I mean, little chickadees survive colder ha

And she tried to get out when I fixed her food dish and I had to push her back in

Indeed...that's where you need to control your emotions, she can feel your anxiety and it can make her more anxious. Haha, it's hard, but you can do it.

I do let mine out during breaking, after the first few days and never when they are struggling to get out, just to let her stretch her legs, take a dust, and see how quickly she might go back to nest...gotta stand watch tho and put her right back in the crate the second she goes for the nest.
