possible cocci

I started it on medicated feed, it's now on grower. It's 6 weeks old. I have no medicated feed left.

I have treated chicks with Corid twice, and both times they bounced back rapidly. I think if you get it in time and treat it with the right meds you have a very good chance of saving your baby. Since you add it to the water you need to make sure they are drinking. I dripped some on the beak of one of mine just to get some of it in them quickly.

Mine got cocci even with medicated feed.

I'm wondering if your chicks need to be on medicated feed a bit longer. I've been switching between Start N' Grow and Nutrena Chick Starter/Grower for my layers, being somewhat chagrined that the only stuff available was medicated feed, BUT perhaps I was a bit hasty. I've had puppies infected with coccidia and it's no fun. My understanding is that most chicks (and thus most chickens) have it and the medicated feed is there to keep the levels down until the chick's immune system can handle it. (If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will tell me

) Six weeks really isn't that old and maybe your little guy (gal?) needs a boost. At least according to the packages I have from Purina and Nutrena, both chick starters are supposed to be fed until they begin laying.

I wish you good luck with your chicks!

I would be tempted to treat them all since one is obviously ill.

Many here swear by Corrid, but I've also had very good results with Sulmet. In fact, I bought some sulmet today for a suspected case of cocci. You may not be able to find both in your area.... either one should work fine.

thanks all. I will see what I can find and what the vet/feed stores recommend and go from there.

will be nice to have whatever I find on hand at home for future, just in case.

Please don't rely just on what the feed store ppl say...alot of them don't know much...I had to order Sulmet online because none of the feed stores here has it....Please don't wait tho...it'll just get worse.

well this morning, I awoke to a better looking baby. it's more bright eyed, not so droopy eyed. Still a bit fluffed up. walking around more , eating and drinking.

still not 100% back to normal. so now, I'm wondering, could it be something else? could it have eaten something it shouldn't have?

it's poos are just runny with some pellet size droppings in the center.

I'm going to watch it throughout today, I have to go to town today, so I will see if something is needed.

if it was cocci, would it be constant bloody stools?

The blood isn't constant, at least not with mine. I only saw it once. I treated based on the behavior, the age, and the fact that they were just starting to have contact with the soil. After I started the treatment I saw the blood, but I would have treated no matter what. It is easy, common, and safe. IMO

Many goat owners treat their newborn kids with corid as a preventative. I don't do that, but I know plenty that do.
