Possible Guinea Eggs in "Quail" Batch?

Oh! Speaking of chukars... Since they're on lock down soon, is there anything chukar-specific I need for them? Can they eat medicated chick starter? I've read that they need more protein than other chicks, so can I just mix in some dried meal worms or something in their food, rather than buying high protein feed?

Our local store didn't have game bird starter so we just started with chick starter and now we feed them 1/2 chick starter and 1/2 game bird crumbles, - after they go through the food processor - crumbles are too big! I'm sure the meal worms would be good, but you'll have to grind them at first lol - just sounds gross.

I can't say about the medicated. We have ducks of all ages so no one ever gets medicated food, for the safety of the duckies!
I can say our chukars are about a month old now (tomorrow) and we haven't lost even one :) So I'm hoping I'm doing something right :)

Thanks! I can't remember if our feed store carried game bird food or not... I'll have to check. I don't mind crushing up some meal worms for the little guys, lol.

Hi Granny!

I feed all my older ones - Guineas, Turkeys, Ducks, chickens that.

I just started out the odd ones - chukars on a little more :) They are on starter / game bird cause after my hubby picked up the game bird we realized it wasn't very high in protein (not starter-game bird starter has 30% protein) so we add the chick starter to it.
Our local feed store has ordered the game bird starter for us, just waiting for it. Chukars require more protein. Although ours seem to be doing okay with what they're on I want to make sure they stay okay. That and our local store is small. Ordering something then leaving him stuck with it wouldn't be good.

I also give starter to my baby bantams, I buy a 50lb bag of starter and when it runs out they get the grower (flock raiser).
I like grinding it ourselves because we make it bigger and bigger pieces as they grow :)

We have healthy happy birds on the Purina flock raiser and you're right, it's a green bag.

i didnt know they made a 30% feed! i buy the crumbles and everyone gets it. the chick starter that i bought ( i dont know what kind) was not as good as the flock feeder . i could see the difference in them with pasty butt and growth and they still seemed hungry and i keep food down for all my critters 24/7

Yes the game bird starter is 30% :)

I'm the same way with feeding. My sister feeds hers 3x a day, but mine have food all the time. I don't buy crumbles because it seems like more goes to waste. Especially since we have an automatic feeder in the yard that goes off 4 times a day in addition to their dishes. Less waste with the pellets for me.
But it's the same feed you have otherwise and our birds love it. We tried layer once but they didn't like it as much and other than making the shells harder I didn't see a difference in egg production. So back to the flock raiser we went!
