Possible Guinea Eggs in "Quail" Batch?

You should've seen it happen! It was just a little hawk... probably half the size of the barred rock it was trying to make off with. It was actually kind of funny to see.

wow! i always reckon if my kittens caught the native pigeons here they would have a quick flying lesson..I guess its eyes were bigger then its muscles huh. Lucky lucky hen.

It was a pretty ambitious bird, if you ask me. Even if he got away with her, I don't think there's any way he'd be able to eat that whole hen by himself.

Ok I have a silly question for any and all... I keep having more roosters show up in my flock of light brahma's. They are all the same age. Born the end of last august (2012) We butchered in march leaving supposedly 6/7 roos for the 60 some odd hens. Then in July found a dead roo and also dispatched another roo who was just to mean to the girls. then in September caught 2 more roos and put them outside the run. Now have I think four roo checks (banded) joined the flock add five more roos to the batchelors outside the run. Still have 2 o3 more unbanded roos to catch and eject. Thinking I have a mad scientist coming out at night and preforming sex change operations on my hens. Hens in "drag" aka drag kings?? I am so confused it shouldn't take over a year for roos to develop into recognizable roos. Although we did have some "lezi-be-hens" Great big things but nothing rooster looking about them. About a third of my girls have no feathers on their backs and huddle in corners in groups when they see the roos coming around. Have a huge run of 110 ft by 200 ft with 6 ft hight woven horse fence and top and bottom boards. No other chicken keepers for miles and no one else that I know of has Light Brahma's... PLEASE ENLIGHTEN ME!!!!!!!

P.S> I do know some of the lesbihens are really hens as have collected eggs from them.

I dont know how well that breed flies but my mixed breed girls have made it over 6 foot fences to destroy the neighbours vege beds... if the roos are keen they'll get over. ? Do you still have the same number of hens. ?. Probably a stupid question, Im still chortling about the lesbihens.

You have 60 hens, so I wouldn't be surprised if you missed a few odd roos in your run. Like keepmumsane said, if a chicken is determined enough, they'll fly up a good 6 or 7 feet.

post of the month!!

it would be my guess that your looking at the pecking order at its finest. the roos you did have in there were dominate so when you looked and or sexed them the others were, so to speak, roosters in waiting . when they were gone the others were able to move up in line. now question, what are your hens doing?

Finally able to go to school today. I have tons of makeup work, though. Bleh.

Anyways, it's nice and warm out today, which is a dramatic change from yesterday's 40º. I might be able to Pip and the gang out today for pictures!
