Possum!

Couldn't find it, dont doubt you though.
If they did contract it though the virus would have a rough time surviving.
I respect possums, clean up crew, immune to venom, rabies resistant and can put themselves into a coma.
CDC did show bats, skunks and coons spread rabies crazy amounts and I learned whales could go rabid....think about that one! :old

If you look at the CDC website, you will find official reports of rabid opossums there. Few, but not zero.

I couldn't find it either, but there were three, as I remember, over a couple of years, in the late 2000's or early 2010's. During the worst of the raccoon rabies epidemic on the East coast.
I've had one rabid raccoon encounter, and that was enough.

It is in this document in the table under wild animals. It lists 2 cases.

Found it, thank you!
Looks like more people went rabid than possums.
Now that does not surprise me.:)

Or India! They have tons of cases too.
I don't think anyone is allowed to remove the street dogs that spread it either.
They do vaccinate some, but the numbers are just huge.
We are blessed in the USA to have so very few human cases; worldwide, it's more like 50,000 to 60,000 each year, mostly children, mostly from dogs, in Africa. Terrible!

Right, Africa and India, and mostly from dogs, who mostly aren't vaccinated. It's hard to manage vaccine that has to be refrigerated out there where there's no electricity and very poor transportation generally, and while there's work being done developing alternative vaccines, it's not out there yet.
