Here are my 2... I think I'm actually going to sell them though. My hen is PQ due to too many toes
5 instead of 4
The roo is very nice though. His tail drags on the ground, and he's only about 7 months old! Super healthy - never any problems with them
They can fly like crazy though! Doesn't bother me any, but might someone else... Mine are very flighty, but cause no problems with my other chickens at all... In fact, my bantam cochin hens have taken a liking to the big boy
Yeah, there are Bantam variations in the Phoenix and the Bantams looks even nicer than the standards to my eyes because they are smaller bodied, yet same length tails if you breed them well enough or collect them from a very good line (non-hatchery stock).
They are very nice in tempermant and often used for shows. Classified under the "Ornamentals" category for chickens : )
To get their Bantam size, I believed they were once crossed with OE Game Bantams (which retains the game-like form and structure)
As for the longtailed breeds, I would say the Phoenix would spend quite a bit of time roosting compared to other chickens but by far, the American Onagadori roost the most. They spend the majority of the time roosting, because perhaps they were bred that way and are more "bird-like"
From what I know and heard about, my two good friends J.J. - Napalongtails & Mr. Hyde got some really nice Phoenix Bantams. I noticed that my new friend Aubrey - BBB have some too but unsure if they are Bantams or not. However, if you don't have any luck, I have them too! Mine are actually from the Champion Show Line a few years back : )
(I am sure you have seen pictures)
Hey Tommy,
I'm Boggy Bottom Bantams, so YEAH! they're bantams, LOL! I think Cy crossed his to Dutch several years back according to a abundant amount of post on the Onagadori Site. Also, I too fully agree that if you want the truly nice ones, you HAVE to buy from good stock. Hatcheries are God only know's what, and like you said are very misinformative on them. You must give them extra babying, and a good diet along with some letuce and such goes a long way.. 2-5 feet is not too uncommon with EXCELLENT genes, hatcheries at times look no different than a normal rooster.
I do have to say though, my phoenix bantams (I dont have any onag's) hardly roost except at night of course, they'll jump up on the poles a little more than most, but usually hop right back off.. The ones I have now can from Travis Anderson and Jim Mellering, but have talked to Toni-Marie and plan to get a good bit color wise off her this year , Lord willing...So hope to have lots of the beautiful little guys running around here before long...
Hello Tommy, I emailed you a few days ago, you've got great looking birds, I have also gotten hooked on longtails since I've been talking with Aubrey, I hope to get a little start with some of his bantam phoenix soon, then he and I both plan to get more from Toni- Marie Austin lines, I think I will also try to breed for american Ohiki type birds, when I get some good cochins. Thanks for the link and info you posted.
There you go! Boggy Bottom Bantams. I only remember the BBB from your icon. Haha. Yeah! Was gonna go back to edit that, forgot it was Dutch. Haha. I agree with you on the hatcheries and all that. Yeah, I would imagine 5ft. long Phoenix to either come from Toni or Cy Hyde. : )
Glad you and RareRoo could get together to get some eggs from Toni next year. Be sure to keep me posted on how they turn out like.
To be honest, I am overwhelmed with e-mails daily so it comes and goes unless someone leave me their number to call. Haha. Remind me your e-mail or name again? Anyhow, thanks! Glad I got you to like longtails : ) Glad you could find Aubrey. From those pictures, they look promising as well. Good for you.
Hope you and Aubrey can make Mr. Hyde and I proud! Haha. Wish you the best and stay in touch!
we'll do Tommy. I 'll keep ya posted on how we come with them. Looking forward to meeting Toni-Marie. I told Clint (RAREROO) I was planning to head up there to pick them up, see the birds and learn a few things I am sure, cant wait. Also, she lives close ish to Charles Hill too, so may make a trip back by there for those pics I told you about. Looking at around March assuming the birds cooperate.
Here's some pictures for my silver phoenix, he has white legs so he's a mix ,one of my hens has slate legs though. He's about 11-12 weeks and all manly protects the girls
